What is the point of Adobe Fireworks?

Animation on the cheap to make your website look better.  Outside of that and hilarious avatars, not really.

Melodic:
GIFs, not necessarily animated ones, are also great for bandwidth. If someone fires up the Digg effect on a small server hosting a handful of images, they'll usually swap those images out into GIF (from PNG, usually).

No, it can be done in Photoshop by itself. It's not great, but it can be done without Imageready.
