when it came to final fantasy's the first one i played was VII, then i got VIII but the discs were fucked so i only completed that a couple months ago when i got a lend off someone i knew who had it, then i never got IX but X was fucking amazing.
as for my favorite, it comes down to a VII/X split, both i just found both to be mind-blowing, a lot of people say VII's either shit or nowhere near as good as the others, from my experience, small as it is, i loved it, X just had everything at the time, great graphics, VOICED CHARACTERS  :-o, a new battle system, while maybe not better, (i thought it was), it was still good to keep a fresh fighting system so it doesn't get stale, and the cutscenes were ridiculously good ands it's pretty cool to have a decent amount os side-quests, only annoying thing was the completely anti-climactic Yu Yevon fight where, not only can't you die, it'd be unlikely otherwise considering he's got all the style and attacking power of a floating melon.
Sephiroth was a much better final boss, but when it comes down to it, ruby weapon's just a bitch, i mean, you fight emerald, beat him and you think, 'damn i'm good, maybe i'll try beat ruby now, especially with those 2 levels i just got' and find yourself with a confused toad Barrett with yellow health and no possibility of beating the disturbingly endurant mountain he keeps spinning in front of. takes a damn bit of training but then look at Penance, that was the same deal, love both games, and i'll probably try getting back into it. was damn annoyed with X-2, but they did have loose strings. for getting back into the series, any suggestion on which to go for? XI any good?

Man, Phoenix Downs are so much worse than Ethers. Shit, half the time, you can't even buy Ethers in a shop until the ass end of the game.

The first five at least and, to and extent, the sixth. They didn't really start becoming a readily purchasable item until the Playstation era, and even then they were way expensive, as I recall. In the fourth one, there was literally only one shop you could actually buy ethers, and that was the Namingway cave outside the final dungeon.

People who say Final Fantasy 7 is the best played that one first.

That being said, my first Final Fantasy was the original, but my favorite is the sixth.

After 9, they went way downhill though.

Well, FFVII had an amazingly deep story (I'm not sure where it is now, but there was a huge article about the themes and underlying concepts/subtexts behind the plot of the game), but it was kind of mishandled in translation. I would love to play a remake with a good translation.

I'm sorry, but it really isn't.

Oh, and the main character of FFXIII is a female. Not a male.

I'd like to call XII a return to form, but I realized a few years ago that I find the Final Fantasy series, as a whole, pretty underwhelming. I hated VII and X, disliked II, loved V, VI and XII and was generally apathetic toward the rest. It's an overall average series at best, and at worst a series that has long outlived its quality with a couple gems here and there.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

2 or 4? Because 4 was  pretty good in my opinion. 2, not so much.

I'd like to think that the I make it evident which I mean when I make reference to VI. I dislike II, but am overall apathetic towards IV. I find it alright, but think it's one of the more overrated installments. They didn't make any real improvements or forward strides in gameplay and the storyline was just average.

I just got FFVI for my Visualboy Advance, and it's great. Like really. I just have to ask, what is the deal of old games telling you "meet this guy in this town", and even though the NPCs that would know exactly where this town is and this person is are in your group, you have to search around everywhere to find what you are looking for? I mean, early on in the game, you are asked to go to South something and talk to the rebel leader. And you go into the town and what? Where is he? Is there no minimap or someone saying "he lives in that part of town". Just no bloody plot line except if you search around for it.

This is why young players is seen as impatient. We want something more than vague clues of where to go.

Of the ones I've played, I'd say 3/6 (whichever it is here in the States) was the best.  Kefka was pretty cool, though he can't hold a candle to Irenicus or The Transcendant One in terms of villainy, though.  7 was good, but overrated.  9 was a lot of fun, and I liked the return to classes and the unrealistic character art.

You are talking about the XIII right?

Because we all know that there are going to be two other XIII games, one of which has a male protag and the other has some card-playing nerd protag.
