Boredoms and Low,

where should I start and why should I start listening to each respective band.

For Low, start with The Great Destroyer. It's pretty enjoyable.

The Great Destroyer is pretty good and everything, but I don't really think it is representative of the reason Low is so amazing.
I would start with the stuff they released on Kranky. Secret Name, Things We Lost in the Fire, and Trust are all pretty much perfect albums from start to finish. The Christmas EP is really good too! Maybe you should start there to get in the holiday spirit.

I guess my opinion on Low is kind of skewed since I have both The Great Destroyer and Trust, but I haven't listened to Trust since I can't get through the first song. It's so boring. I agree that it is not representative of their sound, but damn if "When I Go Deaf" isn't one of the best songs ever.

Secret Name and Trust are especially wonderful, I would go so far as to say everything they did before Drums and Guns was fantastic. Drums and Guns was just pretty good. Plus the Christmas EP, their B-sides collection (A Lifetime of Temporary Relief), and their song with Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
