I like Star Fucking Hipsters. I've actually seen them twice now. But they are just a "supergroup" with members from Left Over Crack so I do wonder how long they will be around for. Two Cups of Tea is a great song for people that want to check out Star Fucking Hipsters.

i don't know much about politics, but i know enough to know that Stza (or whatever he's calling himself this week) has some ridiculously misinformed, sensationalist and frankly fucking childist views, and they always leave a bad taste when i do occasionally listen to LoC. 

what's worse is their army of 14year old fans who will happily shout "fuck cops!!! kill the pigs!!! fuck world trade, yay for 9/11!!!" but have absolutely no answer for you if ask them about why they hold such views.

I do have to agree with you on merit. Seems that Anarchy is the Hot Topic of this generation. I like them cuz of that one song and they do put on a great show. Also that girl is freaking hot(except for that lip tatoo). I'd like to say I hate preaching with my punk but then again I love Bad Religion and always will. I'm just thinking that Stza viewpoints are outlandish and as you said childish whereas Greg's are more rooted and frankly more accomplishable(think I made that word up.)

Anyone remember a band called Lefty?  They released an album on Interscope, opened for a bunch of bands, and then just disappeared.  The most useful thing I can find about them now is this Los Angeles Times article from 2000: http://articles.latimes.com/2000/jul/25/local/me-58690

Some highlights:

The recording’s first single is the potentially controversial “Girls.” Its hummable melody is appealing–and quite radio-friendly–but the words could be taken as inflammatory. Sample lyric: “I don’t mean to say it/But somebody needs to put an end/To Girls.”

Hill, the band’s lyricist, insists the song is neither mean-spirited nor meant tongue-in-cheek. “It is not [meant as] a put-down at all,” he said. “In fact, the first line of the song gives them full and absolute power. A girl will always dominate over the guy in a battle of the sexes.”

Quipped Livingston, “Even though there are differences that can drive us crazy, men and women still choose to engage in relationships with each other, and that fascinates me. Guys see things one way, girls another–didn’t someone write a pretty famous book on the subject?”

“Just to be fair, we’re going to do a song called ‘Boys’ on our next album.”

“We were a so-called pop band in a lineup of punk acts during Warped, but what I really liked was when the kids got tired of punk’s relentless grind, they’d come over and check us out” on the second stage, Livingston said.

“We can bring on the noise, too, but I think they were refreshed by our changes in tempo and maybe a few choruses they could sing along to.”

I have to say it was the 2004 election. Seemed like every punk band out there decided to get political. Some were good some were awful.

Punk never had just one point. For American punk, the point for a while was to just sniff some glue and have some fucking fun.

The story behind this record is so insane and incredible that I'll let someone else explain it. Regardless, you'll never be the same after hearing this "band". It's sad, depressing, yet somehow uplifting to hear the absolute innocence of these backwoods girls. I actually knew someone a long time ago who had an original press of this album. We sat in her apartment and listened to it for hours and I still couldn't believe it. I couldn't sleep for days.

In 1989, Dee Dee Ramone, he of the Greatest Band Ever, attempted to make a rap album, but he combined it with rock, and coined the term "rap-n-roll" to describe it. Thus, he was at least indirectly responsible for spawning such later abominations as Limp Bizkit and Korn. But none of those bands were worse than Dee Dee's album, released under the band name "Dee Dee King" and considered by many to be the worst album ever made. Here's a snippet from his press packet:

The proof is on dazzling display on Standing In The Spotlight, Dee Dee King's debut album on Sire Records. One of the most upfront, exciting, and explosively entertaining entries so far this year. What began to take shape is a sound Dee Dee called "Rap In' Roll." The sound had to be there," he continues, "but in rap, the image can be just as important. I went out and bought the sweatsuits and Adidas sneakers, but it didn't feel right. So I mixed my own style with what the other rappers were wearing. I'm curious now as to whether it could actually be worse than the Shaggs 'offering'.  I'm wondering about something else too...

..."we listened to the Shaggs for hours..." I found the Shaggs to be unlistenable, well, all except for 'My Companion' that is... so I'm wondering how this can be as well? I mean bad music isn't like bad acting. Whereas bad acting can be fun to witness, bad music is just painful.

But as I do happen to have a tape of their music here, I'm game to try it again...maybe I'm mellow enough to get all the way through it this time.

I dunno, I'm really not sure bad acting is better or worse than bad music. Bad music can obviously be annoying, but with bad acting I sometimes start to feel kind of bad for the actors after a while. It's like I become mortified by osmosis, which is probably why I'm not a huge fan of "It's so bad it's good!" cult movies.

Here's the thing though...movies and plays, are about stories...the acting itself is secondary.

Music on the other hand is about the music...if it's bad...well what else is there? With Punk, there was energy and attitude. With Pop, there's packaging. With your kid(or yourself) there's the investment...as in "I'll listen to this crap because I really want, or want my kid, to get better".

With the Shaggs, I didn't ever care, so I had no reason to listen to the dischordant noise over and over again.

I am however genuinely intrigued by these people that say they can, or have, or did, or like them unironically. I want to explore this a little more. And dammit, I can't find my tape now either...!!!

In 2002, the band broke up over a legal dispute between the group members and their parents. The producers wanted the boys to quit school and focus solely on their boy band occupation. Problems escalated, resulting in a lawsuit aimed to remove the band from its producers in the summer of 2002. The band also learned that one of the producers was heavily involved in teenage porn, which didn't go over well with the boys' families. Dream Street won its lawsuit, but the decision had an unanticipated result: as per the settlement, the boys were never allowed to perform as a group together again.

Well, that's a relief.

Currently continuing his normal academic career at Tufts, Ballinger is working on a new project called The Juice, a band he and his freshmen friends recently started. Their debut show was March 13 at Harvard's Battle of the Bands. He has moved away from his previous pop style into more alternative music. "It [The Juice] is kind of Dispatch-Sublimey stuff," Ballinger said, referring to his favorite alternative bands.

Specifically.
Midtown is still around, Gabe is doing his cobra starship thing, and they have gotten fairly popular, and both blink and soco are still super influential in the pop punk scene.
