Saying that 2004 was some kind of Punk Rock political bandwagoning orgy might be correct, but Punk as a whole has plenty of political connotations.

i wouldn't say all punk is about politics specifically, more about independent thinking and questioning authority in general.  that said, there's been some amazing punk bands who've written about little other than girls/relationships (descendents anyone?).

2004 wasn't punk getting political, it was pop-punk getting angsty.

I love blink, Offspring and Green Day, but they all got serious at once. Good Charlotte did too, but who cares about them.
