A film a year for every year you've been alive

(1/14) > >>

Faker:
So inspired by the album a year thread in the music forum thought I'd start the filmic version.

Starting with the year you were born up to this year, pick your favorite, or what you view to be the best (I know these can be different things) film of each year.

I'm working on my list at the moment, but thought I'd post this to get y'all thinking.

EDIT: Here's my first stab at my list

0bsessions:
List thread, ahoy!

1984 - Gremlins
1985 - Back to the Future
1986 - Aliens
1987 - Spaceballs
1988 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
1989 - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (This was a hard year for me to decide, barely beat Batman)
1990 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
1991 - Hook
1992 - Muppet Christmas Carol
1993 - The Sandlot
1994 - Clerks
1995 - Braveheart (This one BARELY beats Twelve Monkeys)
1996 - There is honestly not a single mainstream movie from 1996 I am all that attached to
1997 - Chasing Amy or Suicide Kings. Can't really decide
1998 - Clay Pigeons
1999 - Dogma (Fight Club a close second)
2000 - The Emperor's New Groove
2001 - Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
2002 - 28 Days Later
2003 - This is the hardest one yet. I absolutely cannot pick between X2: X-Men United and Return of the King
2004 - Shaun of the Dead, ever so barely over Spider-Man 2 and Prisoner of Azkaban
2005 - Revenge of the Sith. Yes, really.
2006 - The Departed
2007 - Hot Fuzz
2008 - I'm still undecided between Iron Man and the Dark Knight. It was a great year at cinema to be a comic fan

Ok sure, why not.  I am picky and exacting when it comes to this kind of shit, so I have broken my choices down into the following categories, which I'll post seperately:

Favourite, Fun, Sci-Fi, Australian, Alternative/Cult movie.

I'll start with Australian movies, because it's the easiest.

Year - Movie (if it's missing it means that I haven't seen any decent movies from that year)
1977   - n/a
1978   - n/a
1979   - Mad Max
1980   - n/a (probably Breaker Morant, but I haven't seen it)
1981   - Mad Max 2
1982   - n/a (probably The Year of Living Dangerously, but I haven't seen it)
1983   - BMX FUCKING BANDITS OMG (seriously, everything else is shit)
1984   - Razorback (shitty horror, but nothing else decent)
1985   - Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome
1986   - Malcolm (a seriously fun movie about a quirky inventor)
1987   - The Year My Voice Broke (a coming of age movie, pretty good)
1988   - Young Einstein (a goofy, tongue-in-cheek look at an alternate timeline Einstein's youth)
1989   - Dead Calm (one of Nicole Kidman's only decent movies)
1990   - The Big Steal
1991   - Proof
1992   - Romper Stomper (fucking hell)
1993   - The Heartbreak Kid
1994   - Muriel's Wedding
1995   - Babe (I guessssss)
1996   - Shine
1997   - The Castle (nothing else decent)
1998   - Head On
1999   - Two Hands (one of Heath Ledger's first movies and shows the promise he had even then)
2000   - Chopper / Looking for Alibrandi (two-way tie because these are both excellent movies for their own reasons)
2001   - Don't Say a Word (US/Aus co-production, everything else this year was shit)
2002   - Crackerjack (a very dry comedy from Mick Malloy)
2003   - Gettin' Square (one of these "sad, but accurate" portrayals of Aussie ex-crims trying to make good)

I'll preface this lot with the fact that I haven't seen any of them in full, but that I have seen enough of them to know that they are (in my opinion) the best things produced in Australia for the years given:

2004   - Somersault (the soundtrack is very good and the clips I've seen have been excellent/heart-wrenching)
2005   - Little Fish (Cate Blanchett playing an ex-heroin addict in Cabramatta, the suburb next to where I grew up.  It looks very authentic.)
2006   - Candy (Abbie Cornish and Heath Ledger are heroin addicts.  I want to watch this movie but I also do not want to feel like killing myself afterward.  Dilemma!)
2007   - The Jammed (a story about human trafficking and sex slave trade in Australia)
2008   - The Black Balloon (a coming of age/moving to a new school story plus dealing with a brother with autism)

A related note: this thread is pretty cool, actually because it allows me to go through and catalog a bunch of movies I should buy if I don't already have them!
