Gossip Girl
TheFuriousWombat:
Not for me. I think the pleasure of the show is its vapid, idiotic, overwrought, heavy handed, clumsy, kitsch infested and predictable direction, plotting, acting and writing. It's so bad it's enjoyable. Watching it is like wallowing in filth but somehow it makes it fun (and, often unintentionally I think, funny). I mean, no one actually take the show seriously, right? No one enjoys it for its production values as far as I can tell. It's utterly trashy and that's why it's fun.
Allybee:
I disagree with the whole "so bad it's enjoyable" thing. I think it's a seriously compelling show. and if you wade through the hyperbole, you find some real high school stuff: worrying about getting into your dream college, feeling the limelight shine on your best friend, having feelings for your ex, wanting to date your older brother's friend and maybe getting close (cough), wanting so badly to be a successful artist but not being taken seriously because of your youth, not trusting your parents and wanting to break free from them despite all that they've given you, having problems with your body, whatever.
yeah, sure, I watch it because it's awesome to laugh and talk about with my friends. I'm not arguing that it's an accurate portrayal of high school. I'm just saying don't immediately write it off as being completely unrealistic just because they're rich and go to bars.
also did anyone else notice that blair was the big spoon this week?
TheFuriousWombat:
All those things you mentioned about high school may be actual things some high schoolers go through but that doesn't make their overabundance and exploitation via a cheesy script poorly read by mediocre-at-best actors any less cliche.
Ladybug:
Nope, you're not alone. I often find myself laughing when I'm not supposed to at things that are over the top or just weird acting and all that, but I actually do care about (some of) the characters and/or their relationships as well.
ETA: Okay, so a post was deleted, but my point still stands; that it's not entirely bad and cheesy and trashy, like a lot of people seem to make it out to be. It shows that you can be serious without taking yourself too seriously, I guess, and I like that. Yes, there are some less than stellar actors (and also some I really like), but even most of them have had their moments, and yes, the script can be cheesy, but that gives me something to laugh about, and sometimes it's great.
Noct:
Yeah, it's fun to trash on gossip girl, but the one good thing I can say about it is... hey, at least it's not The Hills! I really have no idea how anyone can watch that show, it makes me acutely uncomfortable just to watch those lifeless girls and their completely unabashed non-acting (yes, it's scripted!).
