New Layout?

<< < (14/25) > >>

pwhodges:
I don't mind the colours, nor the reordering - their both within bounds for an OK change.  But what would be an improvement, I think, would be to move the comic slightly over so that the pale background from the top, right and bottom goes up its left edge as well; that would define it better.

CitizenKane:
As a web designer/developer, I feel inclined to point some things out:

On colors:

* The human eye is drawn to bright colors.
Because QC makes (somewhat, not always) limited use of bright colors, the new beige color is frequently going to be the brightest color on the page.
I found, as I sifted through old comics to get a feel for the new design, that the beige background was actually pulling my eyes AWAY form the comic itself.
* I completely understand that these colors are supposed to reflect coffee of doom's colors. This, however, causes the problem of the edge of the comic feeling ambiguous. Where the comic ends and the background begins isn't as immediately clear as it used to be on some strips.
* Blue is a calming color. It helps a reader to focus on what they are reading, and can actually reduce external "mental noise." Beige, while still a neutral color, is warmer, and thus can increase the number of other things a reader might be thinking about.
On hyperlinks:

This might be more of an opinion - but the new design just wreaks of web1.0... to me it just somehow feels too oldschool.
I think what it is are the floating hyperlinks. Everywhere.
I'm not saying you should make everything look like a button, but a different background color for your hyperlinks would be nice.
Perhaps perserve the idea of a 'navigation bar' up top.
And maybe put all the links to the right in some sort of box...

in short:
Hyperlinks everywhere that look like plain links are no fun.

Finally:

Jeph,
I'm sure you have stared at this site FAR more than any of us. Things get boring after a while. I can totally relate to your desire to just change things up for a bit. We all need change.
Overall I like the new design. I really do.
With a slightly tweaked color scheme (which I know you are working on) and fewer 'hyperlink-looking' hyperlinks, everything will be dandy.

Also, for some lulz, here's how NOT to make a web site:
http://www.pfa.com

(I'm a long time QC fan, and forum reader, but I had to register just to make this post XD)

Dragons777dr:
I really don't like the new layout. I mean, it's peach...  :-o

Apologies in advance for the messy code edits.

Fixed in four; remove clear:both and float:left from #comic; Remove #comic img from the specifier list for .clear; Once these [your original problem] are fixed, #comic's top margin rears its ugly head: change #comic's margin property from '190px' [all four 190px margins] to '0 190px' [side margins 190px, top/bottom 0]

No idea what it'll look like in IE6, but this fixes the 1000px version in firefox and makes it do what you want.

bicostp:
Thanks! That fixed it! And by some miracle, IE 6 doesn't turn it into a pile of randomness!

Uploading the fixed version...

EDIT: 1000px wide version updated. Made a few formatting changes to make the sides feel more even.
