Wait, people have heard of this game?

I've only heard of it because my sister-in-law voices two of the characters

I don't know many gamers but as I understand it the Persona series (rightfully) has a pretty huge cult following (the Gamestop I got it at had a big poster and thing about getting a free art book if you pre-ordered it).

Which characters did she voice?  I am pretty annoyed right now that the two main female characters I've encountered so far sound like they're about 30 instead of in high school like they're supposed to be.  The male voice acting, on the other hand, is pretty good, especially the detective dude your character lives with.

Anyway, I've played about 3 or 4 hours and just now got to the point where I have control over the game.  I appreciate a good lead-in to a story, but Jesus, at least Persona 3 didn't throw several straight hours of conversation at you before you even had the option of controlling where your character goes.

She doesn't voice any of the main characters.  Margaret is one and the other one is some other smaller character.

The game seems a little more railroady in regards to having to do stuff "for the investigation".  I've missed out on getting the info I need to help Teddie find Kanji about twice now.

I picked it up the day it came out and beat it in ten days. It would be hard to decide whether I enjoyed 3 or 4 more. 4 made a whole lot of little improvements on 3, but also got rid of a couple of things I liked (having to build a whole bunch of different stats as opposed to the three is P3 was a little annoying sometimes, and also having to explore after school instead of at night.) But with minor comlaints aside, everything thing else was as good as I expected. Atlus' translation and choice of voice actors was once again wonderful, even with the tons more jibber-jabber in this one. Another thing that bugged me at first was the difficulty, but that soon balanced itself out and became a pleasant challenge instead of HOLY FUCK WHY CAN'T I BEAT THIS GUY ARRRGGH.

Also one of my favorite things was the super-duper final dungeon ending for the devoted players. It was almost as if the game encouraged the players themselves to unconditionally seek the truth in the story and not be satisfied until they got it. It was crazy, but a great addition. A game that is probably just about as wonderful as 3.

So I'll be buying this as well as Far Cry 2 later in the week, but then I have to find something like 200 hours to play the two of them. :(

Jesus, this game is addictive.  I played 6 hours straight last night, and I usually only play about 6 hours of video games a WEEK.

I love all the improvements over 3, except HOLY FUCK I WANT TO MURDER TEDDY.  Every single fucking random encounter, he just won't shut up.  God.

I'm doing a better job of turning off my "perfectionist" mode because I am so not the kind of person who has the patience to meticulously create every possible Persona with maximum skills/stats.  I seriously hope I don't have to restart the game on "Beginner" because of this.

Also, it seems a lot harder to get a first strike on enemies now, even if you tiptoe they detect you from a mile away it seems.

Yeah, but they managed to balance that out by you still being able to get thge advantage, by just striking the back of the enemy.

Also:  The rare mobs I've found so far (Only in the Bath house yet), ATTACK YOU.  NO MORE OF THIS GOING BETWEEN YOUR LEGS AND VANISHING BULLSHIT.

Teddie is not nearly as annoying as, say, any character from the new Sonic games.

I'd be rabidly addicted to this game were it not for my already existing addiction to WoW. Now I'm only mostly addicted to this game.

IMO the difference between Persona 3 and 4 is negligible and both warrant a purchase. The only one thing that makes me like Persona 4 more is OMG I CAN CONTROL MY ALLIES IN COMBAT WEWT x 100.

One thing that bothers me is that the game is mostly a breezy ride to Easyland until you get to where I am, sitting at the save point before the 8-bit boss.  I'm pretty sure I actually can beat him, but the one time I tried earlier was so annoying and seemed like it was going to take me about an hour.

Long boss fights in a game that already requires you to spend 1-2 hours to make any progress at all is a bit annoying.

And Teddie, just, why.  I had a brief moment of relief when he earned his "human form", but that quickly evaporated when I realised that to use him in battle I'd have to use his "annoying as fuck" form.  Who was the idiot that decided to make him a party member instead of Rise and to what address should I ship this dead ferret?

Also, I seriously laughed and went "Wow, just wow" when I started doing the Nurse social links.  Oh, Japan, how I do so love your lassez-faire attitude towards prostitution.

I'm actually a fan of the series, got this game, and was rather impressed.

I thought the lead in was long, but it was kind of one of those things where it gave you a false sense of security, which made it excusable.

The system is a lot smoother, now, and I really like not having to scream in frustration at the ally AI.

By this do you mean that you can't even move the character, or that the game is extremely linear?

He means that it is all story and you aren't doing ANYTHING but going through conversation for like two or three hours.

So I'm at the 70 hour mark and am still only in mid-November.

The humor and quality of voice acting seems to go up as you play.  Kanji is hilarious, and Naoto... man, Naoto.  I love Naoto.  Even Teddie eventually gets more funny than annoying.

I'm a little disappointed you can't "date" the Nurse, though.  Most of the S.Links, even if they start out funny, seem to get emo as fuck about halfway through (especially Yumi and Ai, wow).

Which Persona 2?  There were two, one of which wasn't brought over to the States.

I remember it being pretty good, but nowhere near as good as 3 or 4.  Never played 1, I hear it has a hilariously bad translation.

I don't know moon runes, so I couldn't play the japanese one, so I don't have an opinion on that one. 1 does have a bad translation but if you look past it it is still the best one. Or maybe I just have mah nostalgia goggles on.
