Looking for new music

echofly:
I'm looking for more music to get into; I only have 143 artists in my last.fm and I'm looking to diversify my music a bit more.
I'm open to most types of music, so I guess this is your chance to promote your favourite band. I'd like any suggestions and I think a good idea would be to suggest a couple of artists for any genre and I'd listen to a few songs and post back with my opinion. Or just post lots of recommendations.
Thanks in advance.

Thrillho:
I suspect this will not end well, for a number of reasons.

Care to list any artists you already like so we have some kind of frame of reference?

echofly:
Yeah, I thought no specifications might be a problem.
Here's my last.fm page, but tbh, all the top artists are really well known bands.

I can listen to almost anything I reckon, extended periods of listening to grind hurts but I don't mind hideously poppy tunes.

Cernunnos:
Okay, that helps. I'm not all that familiar with either band, but i'm betting people will say to check out Agalloch and probably Russian Circles.

Baroness. they are a little like mastodon, sorta maybe.

The Shipping News (if you like flies in the fields, you might want to check out slint).

Dead Meadow. one wheel probably would tell you to start with their self titled, but feathers is my favorite.

Since you like mogwai, you should probably also take a look at This will destroy you, as well as Explosions in the Sky. maybe.

pendulum (which one? aren't there two bands called that?) and Daft Punk  tells me there's a slight chance you might like Soulwax.get Any Minute Now.

all the metal-ish stuff tells me i am moving out of my area of expertise. There are plenty of metalheads here, though. No worries.

De_El:
If you have any great love of Massive Attack, you might want to check out Sneaker Pimps, Tricky and Portishead.  They all fell into a sort of accidental movement/non-genre at a particular point in time, and have made some similar but divergent music.

As far as metal goes, if you like Genghis Tron there will be an obvious reference to DIllinger Escape Plan just because they are another metalcore band with spazzy tempo changes and such. More generally, you should listen to Amon Amarth.

Nirvana is a good springboard for getting into lots of different bands as Kurt Cobain was very vocal about his influences and favorite bands. Try out stuff like The Pixies, Beat Happening, Dinosaur Jr., Shonen Knife, The Vaselines, and you can branch out from there.
