A friend of mine from school messaged me this evening telling me that her mom passed away. She didn't have my number and I had to find out from a Facebook message. Sarah's mother was so good to me when we were younger, and she was so thoughtful. I work with Sarah's brother and he told me that she'd gone into the hospital for heart surgery, but that she was doing well. This is all really shocking. I'm not quite sure what to do.

I am going to go to the visitation and funeral, but Sarah and I have grown apart since highschool. We've been trying to get together, and it was going to be this weekend, but her mother suddenly passed yesterday. I'm not sure how to express how sorry I am for the loss.

You showing up to spend time with her to make sure she's not alone will be more than enough. If you check in on her every few days she'll know she can count on you as a friend and that'll bring her some comfort.
