Brief kayak.com search: BOI to MDW, with a short layover in Denver, leaving Boise on the 31st, leaving Chicago on the 3rd - $295 round trip.
Quick calculation, using 1,694 miles (according to maps.google.com) as the distance, a car averaging 20mpg with an 18 gallon tank, and $2.00 a gallon for gas: appx. $360 for gas round trip.

that is about the price of a plane ticket from sacramento to chicago, so for three people in a car (especially my car that gets 38 mpg) that price is totally worth it. except for the part where you drive 6 days for a 3 day meetup...
