Killzone 2
« on: 02 Mar 2009, 11:12 »

anybody else pick up Killzone 2 over the weekend? i know there aren't a whole lot of people with PS3s around here, but surely there's a couple of you that do, right?

anyway, this game looks AMAZING. like, really really amazing. the only thing is that things are often happening way too fast to really enjoy the beauty (yes, it actually is beautiful; espescially the lightning gun). i'm keeping my fingers crossed that you can unlock a slow-motion mode or something by beating it, but that's mostly just wishful thinking.

as far as gameplay goes, it's fairly standard shooter material that is, at times, insanely frustrating and equally addictive. it differs from the first in several serious ways: you can only hold one weapon at a time (not counting your pistol, which has infinite ammo), they've completely done away with the secondary fire modes for all the guns (bummer), and there is no splitscreen mode (super lame).

but, despite it's flaws, it ends being alot of fun. not to mention the epic cut-scenes and in game moments that make you go "whoa" such as buildings falling down around you or fighting your way along the top of a speeding train etc.

i can't speak for the actual multiplayer since i don't have the internet at my house, but playing bot matches on the multiplayer maps is pretty sweet. i like how you don't choose "team death" or "capture the flag" or what have you, like in most shooters; you just pick a map and then run through the various game modes one after the other ala small skirmishes amidst a larger battle taking place within an even larger war. it's pretty fun, and a fairly unique take on multiplayer, i think.

oh and i almost forgot to mention that at first the controls are so fucking stupidly frustrating that it makes you hate the game; BUT keep playing, keep experimenting with the different control schemes and eventually you will find what works for you (hopefully).

anyway...if you have a PS3, like shooters, and have an extra $60 to blow, you should probably go get this game. like, right now.

SO anybody else have it yet? thoughts? facts? heresay? what do you think?
also, how is the multiplayer? i want to live vicariously through you.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I picked it up on release day because I was at a mall, walked into EB and saw it on the shelf.  After purchasing it I explained to my girlfriend how the entire console war was, according to Sony fanboys, going to be crushed by this tiny little disk.  I started playing it later that night, the opening cinematic alone we both said "whoah" at exactly the same time.  I was hearing all the hype about the graphics for SUCH a long time but when you see it on your own TV you cannot help but marvel.  I only played the actual game for a little bit and the controls were a little frustrating.  I ended up going for Alternative 2 in which zooming is handled by L1 and melee is handled by R3.  I'm going to keep playing before I get a real sense of how much I like the game.  And Killzone 2 is most likely going to be the first game I play online.

The online is some sort of mad hybrid between Call of Duty's experience system and TF2's class system, thrown into some of the most impressive maps I have ever seen. It is dangerously addictive.

The next time a medic runs past me as I lay on the ground slowly bleeding to death, I may throw my PS3 through the window.

I hear the controls were screwed up something shocking. Confirm/deny?

The controls are only frustrating because they're not the same as other games. After a few hours you get used to it and it's no more difficult than any other control scheme.

They have 3 different control schemes, if I'm not mistaken.  Right now I'm on Alt 2, the change being that L1 is Zoom and R3 is Melee.  In default controls those two are switched, a setting that caused me incredible amounts of frustration before I ended up switching it.
