Anyway, isn't it the case that everybody's been calling for the death of the music label business for years now? Are we no longer dreaming of a world in which we don't need these companies?

Not these companies. Everyone's been calling for the death of the major label system but these are companies that put out good records and distributed them. They allowed you and me easy access to our favourite music.
I've been told Merge has been mostly through ADA for a while and T&G itself was using ADA so this is kind of a natural progression but it's still big.
Also they're going to be putting out new music again, people. Just not right now.
