Who likes Penn & Teller's "Bullsh*t"?
« on: 09 Feb 2009, 11:00 »

I'm a huge fan of the show. I think it's one of the best programs out there for shattering outdated and erroneous beliefs. Even the episodes where I disagree with their POV are entertaining and thought provoking. I was wondering if anyone else here likes the piece.

Also, for those of you who are interested, here's the tentative list for the topics they'll be exposing as bullshit in the upcoming season:

- orgasms
- astrology
- 2012 theories
- video game violence
- homeowner's associations
- organic farming
- lie detectors
- stress
- the Vatican
- taxes

Okay, some of those things can be disproved;
- astrology
- 2012 theories
- video game violence
- homeowner's associations
- organic farming
- lie detectors
- stress

Though I would like to see how they define organic farming though.

Some of those on the lists though? Now that is hilarious, disproving taxes? Disproving the vatican? Okay if we are taking the "jack chick" school of theory and the majority of the vatican created Islam and runs the world to stop protestants then yes, yes "the vatican" can be disproved, but if they are going to try and disprove the pope in general then that would be something to see.

Sorry, I just can't see some of these working, I may be getting this program mixed up with other ones.

I think by bullshit, they are just exposing some aspect of it as really stupid. For instance, homeowners associations, they exist, they however can most certainly be bullshit.

Exactly. There the bullshit is in the practice, policies, or theories behind what they're talking about.

I'm interested as to how they plan on "disproving" 2012 theories.  That should be fun.

So do you think the world will end on December 21, 2012?  If not, why not?

I like the show fair enough, however I think that very often P&T spew the same bullshit they claim to fight against. Did you see the episode on secondhand smoke? They dismissed the EPA's five-year study with a flick of the hand and some libertarian bullshit about "mai rites!!" and cut the anti-smoking advocate's words up so much, though they didn't succeed in making him look like an idiot like they were trying to. (They did later run an apology for that episode, saying they ignored scientific evidence though they still don't agree with smoking bans, which I can respect.) Or the GMO episode which dismissed any and all detractors with "if you oppose GMO you are a crazy racist" and then showed a bunch of hippies eating leaves. Because anyone who has reservations about GMO is a crazy racist, ad hominem much, Penn? Ever hear of a thing called monoculture, you must not have, because it wasn't in the show. The show is best when it sticks to "point and laugh at the crazy people." I wish they had the balls (or probably more likely, that their network has the balls) to do a Scientology episode.

I don't catch it as much as I'd like, but I still remember Ron Jeremy on there.  "I've given more women orgasms with my tongue than I ever thought about with my penis, and I'm 10 1/2 inches guys."

I think with the disproving the 2012 end of the world theories, they just cite all the other times people said the world is going to end and didn't.

My boyfriend always gets the DVDs for Christmas, so we have up to the fifth season. Some of the people they convince to come on the show... Wow. The tantric sex episode is hilarious. "Honey, can I polish your pearl?"

This show is really awesome.
I've watched it on you tube for a long time and it's always outed all the bullshit from everything.
however just like any other show it can be biased.
(i do think that it is rare event in the show but sometimes prevalent)
And hell yeah imapiratearg pro marijuana reform all the way.
