That is a problem of course; so I suppose the question is what proportion of people to offend before becoming concerned about it.

And the important word in that sentence is "people".
Sarcasm isn't invisible on the internet, but neither are good manners. I'd hope you wouldn't walk into a crowd of strangers and start making homophobic jokes without knowing anything at all about who you were talking to. Actually I'm fairly sure you wouldn't. It was clearly a joke, but dead baby jokes are clearly jokes and they still make me want to punch something.
