I hope so as well. I know if my fiance ever laid his hands on me, whether I deserved it or not, his ass would be locked up in jail. (As my ex should be, but he isn't.)
To reply on the topic: My best friend is almost exactly like Faye. She has a troubled past, she'd had problems in relationships, she's sarcastic, has hit people...
But she's loyal to her friends, sticks up for them, is very understanding... and her friends know that she loves them. Everyone in the entire world has their faults. I'm friends with a ton of assholes, but they have consciences... This is who Jeph decided that Faye should be. If Faye wasn't in the comic, it would be like there was something missing from it.
This just might be a brand of humor you don't quite grasp.
