Showmanship
« on: 15 Mar 2009, 13:02 »

Dear QC,

You should teach me to be a better showman. I've been having trouble with my stupid little game show, the professor is trying to make me show more emotion when I sing, and I really, honestly don't know how. He says I sing great, and that I have made some progress, but that I still have a long way to go.

I have been getting the 'energy' bit down but I just really need to show more emotion. Any tips? Should I think of my dead grandpa/my other grandpa who is dying or something? I am not very good at showing emotion unless I'm under extreme emotional pressure (exception: anger). I really need to figure out how to release that in the studio.

HALP PLZ GUYS

Use those crystals that actors put near their eyes to make them cry.

Do you practice in front of a mirror at all?

Play songs that are actually capable of moving you emotionally.
Use your face to be expressive.
I can communicate complex thoughts and ideas through the exclusive use of my eyebrows. I will teach you. Once you have mastered the art of eyebrow communication, expression emotion while singing will be easy!

Use your whole body.  Body language is key.

Being a singer and being a vocalist are different things. A singer sings, a vocalist performs - don't just try and get the best sustain out of a note, get passion and emotion out of it.

The thing is, and this is one of the things I hate about these shows, not everyone is a showman. I know I'm not, I'm usually locked to the mic stand or a guitar, so unless I'm going Jimi Hendrix there's not much point because it's just not me.

Kneeslides (see The Boss at Super Bowl Halftime).  Also, use the mic stand as a tool.

...you realize I'm in the vocal booth of a studio, right? I like my nuts.

That mic stand thing isn't a bad idea, though.

Also, Darryl, I know I spoke to you privately about this earlier, but I want to thank you again for that eyebrow suggestion. There's a lot of really good shit in here, but that really stood out to me when I practiced in the mirror (thanks Johnny).

Patrick, I like your nuts too.

Also, use the mic stand as a stripper's pole.

You perform the way you behave and if you sell it to yourself in the mirror you'll sell it in the booth, onstage, and everywhere.

you should probably grab someone in the crowd by their shirt and yell at them

if you aren't basing your stage presence off of pink eyes or tim harrington get the hell out of here

Haven't had the energy. With choreography starting up a couple days ago, and with me being sick, I am basically having the shit kicked out of me. I think maybe the best strategy to get back into my rad groove is to not be sick, but all my energy is spent with performing and dancing so it is kindof a vicious cycle.

I still practice when I can though. Which is usually at night, so I have to be kindof quiet, defeating the purpose, but I still get about an hour every two days.
