As you may have noticed from how many threads I'm starting lately, I have rather too much time on my hands.

And one of the things I've been thinking about is how a musician's individual performance can stand out on a piece of already great music, and I've started making playlists based on great performances on any given instrument.

So what are some of your favourite parts from a particular part of the group?
e.g.
When I think of amazing drumming, I think Keith Moon on 'Baba O'Reilly.'
When I think of an all-time great vocal, much as it pains me to admit it, I think of Bono on 'Pride.'
Great guitar work? Well there's millions of them, obviously, but most Sonic Youth songs make me realise how much they've expanded the range of the instrument.
For great bass, I think of many things by Joy Division, but mainly 'Gillette Cavalcade Of Sports' by Glassjaw. I love the interlude and the bass chords leading into the final chorus.
And finally, for a classic piano performance, I think of the live version of 'Dear John' by Ryan Adams on his Follow The Lights EP. There's just something a bit more loose and warm than the album version.

So, individual performances people.

It's not really a "great performance" it's just something that I always liked and stood out.  John Paul Jones bass work on "Good Times Bad Times".  Apart from being a cool riff, when he goes into the chorus after the solo he starts playing the verse riff, then goes back to the chorus riff.  Its also cool to note that had that been recorded modern day, that screw up would have been deleted and replaced with a different clip, instead, it's on the released version.

When i think of amazing drumming, I think of Billy Cobham on 'Dawn,' Neil Peart and Dave Weckl at the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert,  Joe Morrello on 'Take Five,' and Danny Carey on 'Lateralus.'

When I think of amazing vocals, I think of Freddie Mercury on everything ever, Layne Staley on the live/acoustic 'Nutshell,' and Hansi Kürsch on 'Another Holy War.'

When I think amazing guitar work, I think John McLaughlin on 'Awakening,' Steve Howe on 'Mood for a Day' and the Yessongs 'Starship Trooper,' Frank Zappa on 'Montana,' and Billy Corgan on 'Starla.'

When I think of amazing bass work, I think of Paul McCartney on 'A Day In the Life,' Chris Squire, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, and Geddy Lee on pretty much everything.

When I think of amazing keyboards, I think of Rick Wakeman on 'Close to the Edge,' Ben Folds on 'Philosophy,' and John Evans on 'Thick as a Brick.'


There are, of course, countless more, but those are just a few.

Let me tell you guys about Gull.

Well actually, I already did, but I'll tell you about the entire show in depth. The only other important preface is that this guy's real name is nathaniel rappole.

Anyway once upon a time me and my friends went down an hour to Fredricksburg VA to see Romance of Young Tigers play for 5 minutes. But before Romance came on we had our minds blown by perhaps one of the greatest musicians I have ever seen. After loitering around the house for a good 45 minutes, it was time for this guy to start. Everyone at the house gathers in this tiny little living room filled with Romance of Young Tigers amps and in the corner is sitting this guy behind a drumset and holding his guitar. He then puts on this skull mask with a mic in it and plugs it into the reverb channel in his amp (his guitar is in the clean channel). He introduces himself as Nathaniel and that he lives in Richmond and preforms under the name Gull. He is incredibly unassuming and polite, like most musicans who turn into gods when they preform. He begins slowly by playing quiet chords and doing volume swells with them. Then out of nowhere, he being to lay out a beat with his drumkit and one drumstick (the kit was a high hat, a snare, kick, some weird thing. thats it.) and he started to fucking tap out mathy riffs on guitar. AS HE PLAYED DRUMS. And they weren't crappy either, the dude played some complex shit. And then over that, he sang though his skull mask, and since it was reverberated it sounded really fucking scary. Most of the show was just like this, and everyone sat there smiling with so much joy it was crazy. At the end though he got up and stood on the top of his bass drum and started singing really scary stuff and we were all like OH GOD OH GOD but holy shit it was one of the single greatest performances I have ever laid eyes on. Guys if you get a chance to see this guy, fucking do it. He is also the friendliest motherfucker as well as a fucking talented musician. He's incredible.

Seriously, watching that video with all the horn players was awesome.  At one point he looked like the most determined man in the world, it was just the most amazing sight.

it's kind of an obvious choice, but jeff buckley's "grace" (i'm referring the song, although the whole album isn't far behind) is, for me, the epitome of amazing vocals.

for bass, i'd probably go with either "turnstile" by hot water music or "world's on heroin" by ALL.

This is the first thing I thought of when I saw the topic.  I have the DVD of them live at the Metro in Chicago when he comes back out to do that song by himself as an encore; It gives me chills.
