New Tortoise track (free mp3) is nuts
« on: 05 May 2009, 12:42 »

This came up 'pon one of my RSS feeds this morning.

Not sure if the whole album's leaked or whatever, but this is really ... tough sounding ... compared to most of their output since way back.  Huge drums, cool electro-funk breakdown (haha!), arpeggiating outro...

Listen to this song as well: http://pitchfork.com/news/35239-tortoise-premiere-new-song-prepare-your-coffin-announce-tour/

It's as if they took all the crazy jazz trajectory of their past music and decided to make it KICK ASSES. Tortoise: best MIDI Dad Band ever.

Tortoise is a band I've had trouble getting into for awhile, but I am looking forward to seeing them at the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago because I am sure it will be one of those transcendent moments where I just "get" the band instantly (see: Okkervil River).

Don't get me wrong, I love Tortoise a lot. That's probably why I hate this song. See, I love the music Tortoise has made in the past. This...this is something else altogether. Some weird almost-power-metal wankery. I think I'll go back to 'Millions Now Living...' and 'TNT' thanks very much.

I love the music Tortoise has made in the past.

I love the music that Radiohead made before Kid A and Wire records like Pink Flag. Doesn't mean I don't like what they do now. It is just different! Let artists progress rather than stagnate.

I'm all for progress as long as it's moving towards something better. I just think this song is suggestive of an awful direction for any band to go in.

I thought it was suggestive of a KICKASS direction for the band to take. It's just Tortoise with teeth.

So you're saying this direction is unnatural and(pretty much) useless?

Have you ever seen teeth on a tortoise?

No, I'm saying it's a badass mutation, but it's still very much a Tortoise.

Yeah, I prefer their first bunch of albums, but have to say this seems more interesting to me than anything I've heard since 'TNT'.

And not that much heavier than, say, Ry Cooder (um their track called that) if you can see past the production differences.
