Inlander:
It's suddenly occurred to me that soul might be the greatest genre of popular music ever created. Maybe not, but either way how the hell do we not talk about it more around here?

So, favourite artists anyone? Songs? Albums? Was Motown as good as Stax? Who do you think is the real godfather of soul? Are there any new artist out there at the moment who are as good as the classics of yesteryear?

To start us off here's my most recent discovery, the rather amazing and wonderful Lee Moses, with "Bad Girl" (parts 1 and 2):

Tyler:
Sam Cooke is easily one of my most favorite artists of all time.

Bring it on Home to Me.

Inlander:
Shit yeah, his Live at the Harlem Square Club is one of the very few albums that I would consider absolutely essential for everybody to own a copy of.

Dazed:
Tower of Power.

the_pied_piper:
Marvin Gaye.

Also, pretty much most of MOTOWN.
