First of all, no one, save Jeph, knows what the character's motivations or thought processes are. Saying you understand it better than any other person who reads the comic just earns you the :roll: What? You think you're the only person on here who is shy and/or socially awkward? Really?
That said, the fact that she freaked herself out with that smile suggests that it is not your standard shy smile. She talked herself up to it and tried to smile in what she thought was an appropriate way. It was therefore not a natural smile and that makes the expression forced.
