Pokemon Gold and Silver fucking Remakes

<< < (4/5) > >>

I thought there was more than that.

Nodaisho:
IIRC, it was the pokemon you could catch, like in R/B. And Silver's special ones could only be caught in the morning, while Gold's could only be caught in the evening. Might have those switched around, I learned it almost a decade ago (shit I feel old), and haven't had much reason to think of it since.

Also: I loved that special event the one where you would have to catch the best pokemon you could in a time limit in that one place and got judged on how good it was.

Yakob:
Bug Catching Contest! Yessssss.

I can understand that. My Silver Cartridge already went to shit and can't save.

I don't know if this is considered necroing the thread... it's a few months old, but the games just recently released in Japan, and I wanted to share my opinions on it, and it seemed better to do it in this topic than making a new one. But if I was wrong, forgive me.

To be perfectly honest, I was really disappointed when I heard they were remaking Gold and Silver. In my opinion, 2nd gen suffered from some rather serious problems. The overworld design has you constantly walking in circles (such as having to pass through Ecruteak city 4-5 times during the course of the story). The difficulty progression really, really sucked. The wild Pokemon were so weak as to make leveling near impossible anywhere outside of Victory Road or Mt. Silver. I have 7 badges, yet I'm fighting Rocket Grunts that still have level 17 Zubats. I mean, I'm the champion, I go a new place to explore, and all the wild Pokemon are still level 15. Every trainer I fight except for 2 are weaker than the people I had to beat to get there. Which brings me to the third major problem. Kanto was handled horribly in G/S. All the interesting places were ripped out (every dungeon except for Rock Tunnel). The trainers offered not even a semblance of a challenge aside from Blue/Gary. It just wasn't any fun by the time you get there.

Now... the remakes addressed one of these problems, in the fact that they largely restored Kanto. Most of the dungeons are back, which is a serious plus. It means there's more to do than just go to each city and whomp the non-challenging gym leader. The other problems... not so much. Johto's overworld still sucks, and the wild Pokemon are still too weak to ever seriously train off of, which is a problem when trying to do something like train for the Elite Four challenge.

As for the entirely new additions, they're a mixed bag. Some are great, such as Johto's new customizable Safari Zone. Some are interesting and/or kinda spiffy, like the way your lead Pokemon will follow behind you while traveling. Some are just pointlessly useless, like the Arceus and Pikachu-Colored-Pichu events.

So... yeah. I'll get one, but I don't think I've ever been less excited for a Pokemon game. Which saddens me, as I really enjoyed Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

LTK:
Have you considered the possibility of yourself being higher level than the game intended you to be at that point?

Anyway, I read about the minblowing success the two games had in Japan.

--- Quote ---Let's put [1.5 million sales in two days] in a bit of perspective: While not quite as impressive as, say, the 2.8 million copies of Wrath of the Lich King sold in a single day, that was a worldwide launch, and there are billions of people in the world - while there are only 100 million people in Japan. Or, to look at it another way, for every person who bought the PS3 Slim in Japan last week, ten bought SoulSilver or HeartGold in just two days.

From here. And there are shortages. You could say 'Oh, those crazy Japanese and their crazy game obsession', but I honestly don't think it's that weird to like Pokemon so much.
