Now why on earth did anyone investigate that?

Because clearly it was important. Apparently someone did a study to discover that primates such as chimps, bonobos and gorillas enjoy a good tickle. Why that is important I have no idea but I do know that apparently handlers would tickle the baby primates until the baby either didn't want to play anymore or until the handler got too tired. Apparently in many cases it was the latter.
