Sven plays WoW.
« on: 11 Jun 2009, 19:54 »

Makes you wonder who else in the cast plays.

It got me thinking it might be fun to guess at what race/class each character plays if they all played WoW.

Sven's a Rogue ... maybe  Hunter ... probably an blood elf.

And, yes, I should probably go shoot myself now.

Notice she said 'a' Spanish word for fuck, not 'the' Spanish word for fuck.

Goldshire is the town in the human start area that is the unofficial capital of "ERP". Erotic Role Playing. You see various female character in only their skivvies giving lap dances, and god only knows what's being said in the private messages. Raven would run across this scene on her first day in game, and... well... I'm guessing that she would end up as the richest level 5 character on the server.

And this development of Goldshire by players is so universal and widespread across all of WoW that OFFICIAL LORE has actually been altered/created to reflect Goldshire's seedy nature. Which is hilarious because when the game lauched Goldshire was supposed to be this peaceful little hamlet.

This is simultaneously the most disturbing/retarded/hilarious thing I've ever heard about WoW.  I'm glad I've never played it.  I just don't get the appeal.  I wonder... why are all MMORPG's so similar (in a bad way)? You know, slow gameplay, repetitive quests, etcetera?  If you take the online aspect away from it, no one would play it.  Why not build an MMO around a game that's actually fun to play by yourself?  Whatever.  I don't really care that much.

As for the QC characters, I'm surprised that even Sven would play WoW, even while being depressed.  I just never imagined any of them playing it.

WoW makes its money through subscriptions. The longer Blizzard can keep you playing, the more money they make.
That's why the gameplay is slow and the quests are repetitive; it keeps people playing for a long time, and thus increases Blizzard's proffits.

Does this count as OCD/nitpicking?  Because in my defense MMO is a widely accepted term used in place of saying "MMOG."  It's easier to say.  For instance, have you never heard everyone and their mother say something to the effect of "Hey dude, check out this new MMO I've been playing," or "This MMO is unbearably bad."  It seems pretty unnecessary to call me out on that one.

Are you doing this on purpose? Oh, I see, you're confusing MMO with RPG. There's more online multiplayer games than RPGs, you know.

By the way, Sven's Twitter has comments on WoW for the first time in months. Comments, that is, not just on WoW.

I've actually tried Guild Wars.  Still not my cup of tea.  I guess I'm just not meant for the MMORPG scene.  I don't like the structure, they all seem bland and generic to me.  I'll use MMORPG from now on to avoid the confusion and people harassing me (jk I know it's not mean-spirited).  Honestly, I was using MMO interchangeably with MMORPG just because MMO is shorter, and I figured everyone would understand considering the context.  I'm really just lazy is all.  I didn't want to have to type an extra three letters!

In summary-
-MMORPG's are not for me.
-I do know the difference between MMO and MMORPG.  I'm just lazy.
-I do know that saying "This MMO sucks" does not make sense grammatically if you expand the acronym.
-I hate you all
-I don't really hate you all :)
-It's 3:45 AM
-I'm going to bed.
-I love you.

Try Guild Wars. No, I'm serious.

Theoretically, you can play GW largely by yourself, but once you get to certain quests having a party full of bots blows monkeys. The healer minion, who can resurrect anyone/everyone in your party, doesn't know to keep itself healed and/or out of the line of fire. It's frustrating. In WoW, it sucks not to have bots available, but it's not unusual to run in to someone trying to do the same quest out on the field and you can always look for a group in town.

I played GW for a long time and I've been playing WoW for a little bit now and, honestly, I like WoW better. I think my favorite was when I used to play RO, but they don't have the same level of graphics and most of the servers I played on usually started out great and went downhill until they died. It got old.

RO stands for Ragnarok Online.

MMORPG still refers to something that's multiplayer.

When I said, "Why not build an MMORPG around a game that's actually fun to play by yourself," I'm just talking about the gameplay.  If the gameplay is something that I would not want to play single-player, why the hell should it be any different with lots of people?  If I want to play an MMORPG, I do indeed want to play with other players, not just by myself.  All I was saying is that MMORPGs rely mostly on the fact that it IS massively multiplayer.  This should not be the only gameplay hook.  Other than that, in my opinion, there is no reason that I would want to play it.

For instance, I enjoy playing most of the games of the Final Fantasy series.  Most of you probably know that FFXI was the series' attempt at an MMORPG.  It was terrible.  If they had made the core game engine more similar to what made the games popular in the first place, it would have been more accessible and fun to play.  That's really all I meant.  Also, don't flame me if you hate Final Fantasy.  I don't care, I do.  I really feel dumb for having to explain myself so much.  Sorry everyone.

Also, on an added note, Guild Wars is probably the MMORPG that I've had the most fun with.  Like I said though, it was still repetitive and slow.  I did get bored of it pretty fast.  I never played Ragnarok Online, but I suppose it was pretty popular, as I've heard about it a lot.  An MMORPG based off of Neverwinter Nights?  Not sure how that would work out, but can't say I'm terribly excited for it.  We'll see.

With RO you can do a lot solo. If you know how to handle aggressive mobs you can solo most dungeons and mid to low level bosses.

And the sprites are cute.  :-D

I'm glad I've never played it...I wonder... why are all MMORPG's so similar (in a bad way)?

Can you please tell us of this way you know that a game is like others in its genre without playing it?

Or have lots of towns in other MMO's turned from peaceful hamlets to places for female characters to dance for money?

I've actually spent more time than I'd like watching the game be played.  My friends (who are brothers) used to play WoW all the time, so sometimes when we'd hang out, they would be in the middle of a quest when I went over to their place.  I would just sit and watch them play while they wrapped it up before we went elsewhere to hang out.  From what I saw of them playing, I was able to judge that it is indeed quite similar to most other MMORPG's that I had played before, and from there, further judged that I had no interest in it.

And actually in Guild Wars there are a few spots where masses of people get together to have dance parties.  Some of it was ERP, but from the sounds of it, a lot more subdued than the aforementioned Gold Shire.  I'm pretty sure that any MMORPG that has dancing actions is going to have some people do similar stuff in it.  It's like... some weird online game rule.  Or something.

It has little to do with lumberjacks or ninjas.

Most of those dance parties happen pre-searing Ascalon. So basically Ascalon was a rocking club party before the Charr came and burned it all up.
