Looking for new Metal Music

KharBevNor:
The Dillinger Escape Plan really are not a metal band though.

I gotta stand with him on this point.

Koremora:
I'm not really disputing any individual selections or things that he didn't think were "metal", more just the general dickhole authoritative tone he took with the whole thing. "Look everyone, I know exactly what metal is and is not, and I am going to go to great lengths to make that fact apparent to all of you. LOOK AT ME!" That kind of posting really doesn't contribute anything helpful to the topic at all and just makes you look like an asshole, really.

To be clear, I just kind of lump the term "metal" with any kind of heavy music that's guitar oriented. That could be just a lack of expertise or something on my part, but I was simply trying to make suggestions of "heavy" music that some people might like. That's no reason to make a giant post taking a massive dump all over everything I said. Whether or not the bands fit your definition of "metal", they might fit for someone else. The way Khar phrased it, more of a general "Hey, DEP aren't really metal", is fine. Kermit's "NONE OF THIS IS METAL YOU ARE A GIANT FUCKING IDIOT FUCK YOOOOOOOOOOU", not so much.

KharBevNor:
Yeah but, they're not a metal band.

That's not a value judgement. It is kinda like, say, a friend tells you his favourite goth rock band is New Order. It's not even 100% wrong, and it doesn't mean New Order are bad. But they're not a goth rock band.

You see what I mean?

This is also true of a few other bands people have mentioned but I've been leaving off on it.

Koremora:
They have elements of metal, that's why I included them. I was more taking this thread as a general "heavy music thread" than I was a "metal is a very specific genre and you must post bands only within these set guidelines or else be publicly shamed" thread. Like I said, it's fine for people to not agree with the placement, I'm not defending DEP's status as a metal band. My post was just a list of friendly suggestions that someone might like if they like metal. And my point right now is that Kermit's post was just a giant dick move that is entirely unnecessary and counterproductive to the entire point of the thread, which is to turn people on to new music.

a pack of wolves:

--- Quote from: Mr. Doctor on 18 Jul 2009, 12:02 ---- Metal Archives is full of hypocrites if you ask me. They have drone bands like Sunn O))) and Nadja. But they don't have drone bands that sound more metal like the band Angelic Process. And they don't put Nü Metal and Metalcore... Both styles SUCK, I think we can agree on that. But they are a type of metal no matter if we like it or not. I dislike that kind of attitude on MA...
If they have drone... Then I don't really see why they don't put Metalcore and Nü Metal. And no... The bands being shit is not an excuse for not making a place for them.

--- End quote ---

I would say that excluding metalcore is perfectly reasonable since it's a subgenre of punk not metal (hence the 'core suffix). But they fluff that justification massively since they include plenty of punk by listing grindcore bands. It does seem to mostly be about what it's acceptable for a metalhead to like rather than what's technically metal. Which is fine really if that's what they want to do, but I totally agree that Metal Archives doesn't seem to be a very definitive way of determining whether or not a band should be classed as metal or not.
