some metal albums released this year that I have been enjoying immensely, in alphabetical order:
Amesoeurs - s/t: think spacey post-rock infused black metal. if you like Agaloch you'll like these guys
Animals as Leaders - s/t: hands down one of my favorite metal albums this year. The guitarist is way too talented. I also upped this album in the mf!re thread a little while back...
Architects - Hollow Crown: pretty technical metalcore. You'll like LOVE these guys if you like IKAPQ/Acacia/MisSigs
Darkest Hour - The Eternal Return: American-style Swedish melodic death. After a couple listens, this is definitely their best since Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation (which I would probably check out first - that album is amazing)
Goatwhore - Carving Out the Eyes of God: blackened death metal with catchy riffs that are sludgy as fcuk and heavier than a hundred walruses.
Gorod - Process of a New Decline: I'm still not sure how these guys can be as technical as they can and still maintain an amazing level of melody and coherence. Crazy talented, these guys are.
Hacricide - Lazarus: Another one of my favorite albums so far this year. Heavy, techincal, amazing songwriting and dynamism. Some of the softer parts reminded me of NIN, mixed with heavier Meshuggah/Gojira like riffing. A Definite must listen.
Kreator - Hordes of Chaos: THRASH/CIRCLEPIT/THRASH
Nightrage - Wearing a Martyr's Crown: Top-notch melodic death metal. Catchy riffs + solos with outrageous vibrato and scale runs = really fun listen
Obscura - Cosmogenesis : Techinical death metal with sexy fretless bass, razar-sharp riffs, ridicilous solos. Seriously, that bass,

i'll second Darkest Hour. the more i listen to them, the more they're becoming possibly my favourite metal band, at least of the modern crop of metal bands anyway. any of the last four albums ("hidden hands of a sadist nation," "undoing ruin," "deliver us," and "the eternal return") are all a good bet. what came before wasn't bad, but not a patch on those four.
i'd also recommend, in a similar vein, Sylosis, a UK melodic thrash metal band. "conclusion of an age," their full length, is amazing, but i'd definitely recommend searching for their earlier EPs "the supreme oppressor" and "casting shadows."
oh, and if you want to hear the most badass melodic death album ever, and also find out where most of the metalcore/deathcore/melodic death (etc.) bands got their ideas from, check out Carcass' "Heartwork" - a fucking masterpiece.

These recommendation... what the hell? Do you people really have that bad taste in metal?
I'd like to cancel out the Agalloch suggestion. Bland and terrible. Same with, well, most of the other bands here.
Metallica's first four, Megadeth up to Rust in Peace and Slayer up too Reign in Blood are all pretty essential. Excellent thrash free of gimmicks- and the material from these guys is all really different.
Bolt Thrower and Unleashed would be my favourite death metal bands. Free from triggers and monotonous songwriting, just heaps of really huge riffs. Every Bolt Thrower album sounds exactly the same (except for the debut) so just pick one at random, you can't lose. For Unleashed I'd recommend Where No Life Dwells. Otherwise, Demilich and Cosmic Atrophy both win by virtue of sheer weirdness and excellent songwriting.
In terms of doom metal good starting points would be Candlemass (King of the Grey Islands probably isn't their best but it's my favourite) and maybe My Dying Bride's Turn Loose the Swans. I guess some Sabbath would also be good- get Paranoid, Master of Reality and/or Heaven and Hell. For weirder slow albums I'd recommend Thergothon's Stream from the Heavens, Disembowelment's Transcendence into the Peripheral, and Nadja's Touched. These three albums are pretty inaccessible, though.
General heavy metal is simple- Iron Maiden (get NotB and maybe their s/t) Judas Priest (sad wings of destiny, screaming for vengeance, Painkiller) and some Manilla Road (pretty much any album).
All of these bands are great; gimmick free (unlike most of the previous recs) and just chock full of great music. I've got a bunch more suggestions but this will be enough for now, I guess.
