Let's Talk About The Inconsistent Yet Fun Red Faction: Guerilla
Melodic:
Okay, so I rented it. Johnny C, I don't get what your dealio is with the controls. Despite playing almost exclusively PC FPS titles, I was able to shoot these baddies pretty consistently. Yes, it's just like Saints' Row. No, that's not a bad thing. The sticky reticule is fairly blunt, and I found it actually being a little TOO auto-track-y.
Also, you can make crouch a toggle in the controls menu.
On everything else, I pretty much agree with.
Hustler:
I made what was for me the rare decision of not waiting until this game dropped to around $20, getting it from Newegg for $40 a couple weeks back. Multi is loads of fun, the maps are fairly generic but several modes exploit the game's strongest point (beating the piss out of everything that stands more than six inches off the ground), and the backpacks really add flavor to everything, making up for the fact that most of the weapons are not as original (although the Shredder or whatever it's called certainly bucks that trend, not many games give you a launcher for saw blades that look suspiciously like giant ninja stars). As for single player, I have fun with it, but agree with some of the points. Buildings have oddities about what will and won't affect them, and the gunplay, while functional, is not all that special. Also, House Arrest missions bite the big one. The rest of it, however, is big dumb fun akin to what was found in Mercs 2, except the destruction's on a smaller scale and it's less likely to glitch out. It wasn't my primary motivator for the purchase, but I'm having a good time with it. All in all, I think it's a great way to kill a couple hours, even if it's probably not Game fo the year material.

not as auto-track-y as say a targeting system which would be really nice, is my point. or maybe a cover system that works, like, at all.
Also I didn't play the online multiplayer but the local multiplayer is pretty much "h.o.r.s.e." but with destroying buildings, so that rules.
Double also I didn't mind House Arrest actually! The EDF Raid missions were clearly the best though - the Jenkins missions were alright but it was more fun to just kind of freeform go in and assault some structures with a giant team of rebels.
LTK:
Excuse the necroing of this thread, but since I recently bought and played the PC release of this game, I wanted to say a few things. First and foremost: The PC version has every flaw Johnny pointed out, but maximized one thousand times. The controls for every single function are complete and utter shit, without exception. From menu selection and scrolling to aiming and firing to driving anything, they all suck. I feel like I'm using an analog stick instead of a mouse everywhere, and I cannot use analog sticks for the life of me. Cars, driven by WASD, take a full second to respond to any of the keys. No kidding. The aiming reticule is incapable of moving at the speed of the mouse, is fixed to one speed only, which makes any slow-moving-projectile weapon a nightmare to use. And although you can take cover, you cannot shoot from out of cover. What. Concering the buildings and how they fall apart, I have the distinct feeling that the geomod engine architects could not figure out how to make a building stand upright while keeping the materials act realistic, so they just made everything made for support of hardened titanium and everything else of sand. Structures do not fall down when one metal beam is still in place, even though everything else on the ground floor has been blasted away. Assignments, compared to missions, are irritating and useless and almost completely unrewarded regarding scrap.
I'm starting to wonder if it was worth the €17,50 I paid for it.
