Or else just save it as a 24-bit PNG. PNG supports several colorspaces, including 1-bit, 4-bit, 8-bit, and 24-bit.
24-bit will always be larger, since it's got way more colors to deal with, but there are some programs, like PNGCrush and PNGOut that can try to compress it as much as is reasonably possible.
Today's comic was originally 165,272 bytes. PNGOut got it down to 156,292. Not a lot, but when multiplied by the number of viewers downloading the comic, it can result in a fair amount of saved bandwidth.
I'd guess that doing a full comic in 24-bit would result in something over 450kB though.
