although a guy wearing a white suit in such an enviroment while fending off hordes of zombies does seem an odd artistic choice. either they had to build in a realistic dirtying effect or it will come across as somewhat ridiculus.

One of the problems that faced L4D in pre-release builds was that the Player Character models were practically indistinguishable from zombie models in terms of color palette, which led to increased friendly fire incidents, and friendly fire at difficulties above Normal is a serious danger. In the retail version that's still occasionally a problem for characters other than Louis, who is easily identifiable by his white dress shirt and red tie.
As you can see, at least the concept art for characters in L4D2 features colors that are bright and high-contrast in relation to the world - white, pink, yellow, teal, and a cleaner gray. I would wager that it's a design decision as much as an aesthetic one.
