http://www.antiquiet.com/news/2009/07/homme-grohl-john-paul-jones-new-band/

Holy mother of fucking God, is what I have to say.  I'm pretty sure that at some point when I was in high school someone asked me what the best possible band ever would be if I had the ability to put any three musicians together and I actually gave this answer (I had been listening to a fuckton of Songs for the Deaf at the time).  If this is a tenth as fucking mind-blowing as it has the potential to be, I might not listen to anything else for a month straight.

But seriously, I'd probably cream my pants if this happens.  I remember reading about this either yesterday or two days ago somewhere and cant for the life of me remember where i read it.  It has potential to be insanely awesome.

Last good release by any of these guys was Kyuss, which was what, 15 or so years ago? I doubt this'll be anything but some really, really awful.

I know how easy you probably find it to dismiss Queens of the Stone Age as "gimmicky," but Josh Homme has never found it difficult to output solid fucking quality jams.  I think that if you give the QOTSA catalog a good listen, you'll find very few genuinely weak moments, and quite a few total gems.  And Dave Grohl's work on Songs for the Deaf was pretty fucking excellent.  I think they've got great creative energy between them, and I'm just curious as to how John Paul Jones might influence the mix.

I mean, it's not like any of them have lost any degree of their talent.

I didn't really like the production on a few of the QOTSA albums, which is a shame because there's some good stuff in there.

If Josh Homme can get his head out of Brody Dalle's ass long enough to write some decent music, this could be good.

Supergroups never seem to work.  ELP started off fine but sucked after Trilogy and Tarkus, Mr. Big had some good stuff but nothing phenomenal, Asia had some decent tunes, but those original four members obviously weren't meant for each other, Chickenfoot was the same, don't get me started on Winger.  This'll probably be okay at best, boring at worst.

One can not help but think what if Mike Patton (as mentioned in the article) would be thrown in the mix as well.

I didn't know they were considered a supergroup.  I know Jimmy Page was from the Yardbyrds but that's about it.

I'd offer up the Travelling Wilburys as a different defense but to be honest I can't stand them.

Even if you considered Fugazi to be a super group I would have to say that they're the exception that proves the rule. The path that Fugazi took is so different from the dalliances of your typical short lived mainstream super group that one must acknowledge that grouping them together without a disclaimer is absurdly reductive.

Man, I am with Caspian on this one.  The first QOTSA album was ok because if you really tried you could pretend Kyuss got a new singer or something.  The rest of their shit was mediocre.

Dave Grohl makes some ok music I guess but it's all just pop rock.  Nothing exciting about it at all.

CSNY blew. Neil Young is just about my favourite songwriter ever and even I can't defend that shit.

I guess 'Ohio' would have been a pretty decent song if it had been recorded with Crazy Horse or The Santa Monica Flyers but with CSNY they managed to make it sound utterly insipid.

Hey, I like "Helplessly Hoping" and "Find the Cost of Freedom".

Other than that, I could really take 'em or leave 'em, doesn't matter to me.

Yeah, it really was a great marriage between band and drummer. In a band less thunderous you would probably end up asking yourself what that poor cymbal did to deserve such a beat down, but in Kyuss I wouldn't want it any other way.

If I'm not mistaken Alfredo Hernandez was drummer during the (supposedly mushroom-fueled) sessions that produced "Fatso Forgetso," which in my opinion makes him more than worthy of his place behind the kit.  The drum work in that song alone fucking slays.

I agree that Brant's songwriting was indeed irreplaceable.  But you can't front on Alfredo's chops.  I think I heard once that he was actually the guy who originally taught Brant how to drum in the first place.

I just prefer Brant's particular sensibility. He's said on a few occasions that his style was in many way defined by his technical limitations, but frankly, I really like the box he put himself in, so whether he could stretch out beyond that or not really doesn't interest me. I tend to be of the opinion that musical performance is often more dependent on being in the right place at the right time with the right people more than it has to do with being technically skill anyway. There's nothing wrong with Hernandez as an artist or a musician but if you asked me who was the defining Kyuss drummer I'd say Brant without hesitation.

I still have a soft spot for the songs on the first QOTSA record. Off the top of my head, 'Regular John', 'If Only' and in particular (for my money Homme's best song overall) 'How to Handle a Rope'.

'Regular John' is still, for my money, Queens' best tune.

I would buy an album consisting only of this rhythm section.  Dave Grohl is probably the closest (mainstream) thing we've got to John Bonham right now, so this is the best possible chance of getting a Zeppelin rhythm section update.

In other news, I will give you two hundred dollars for this album.
