It gets less confusing if you start thinking about why each glass is shaped like it is.  Then you're just looking for a glass shape, rather than "oh, what does that red wine glass look like."  At least, that's how it was for me.

Good wine isn't always expensive, but it often is.  That said, $40 dollars is really not a lot of money for wine.

I know all that. I understand that each glass is shaped for certain reasons, but man is it difficult to remember why, and who goes where, and etc etc.

Right.  That's the thing.  Once you start remembering why, it gets a lot easier, for me.  I went the longest time, "So, ummm...  Red goes in the small one because you want to concentrate it?  No?  Damn."

That is my excuse every time. I spend too much money on wine. Mind you, for me €20 constitutes 'too much', but hey.

Also, when it comes to cheap but nice wine, I generally buy some sort of Pinot Noir — it's not always amazing, but it's almost guaranteed to at least be nice.
