Faye's Dad
eurydice23:
Yeah I know nobody has posted on this, but on the off chance anyone sees this...
Suicide is hard, even for the people involved. I knew someone who attempted suicide, and when questioned, his answer was "I don't even remember why I did it." So if we could bring him back, it's possible he wouldn't even know. It's selfish to commit suicide because you're focused on immediate gratification, and not thinking about anyone else, and how they might be affected. As a gal with depression, I do realize that it's hard to focus on other people, but that doesn't make it any less selfish. I think he was probably had depression, and this was his release. There have been stories of people killing themselves as revenge, but I doubt that was his MO. I for one would be really interested in exposition about why he did what he did, but that probably wouldn't be possible, unless a diary was found, or a friend came out of the wood works who knew.
So yeah, this was probably pointless, but I wanted to say it! Lurkers enjoy?
Is it cold in here?:
Based on the experience of my brother's suicide I don't believe there is such a thing as an "explanation".

I think that depends what kind of parent you are to them. A parent needs to be a stable, consistent force in a kids' life, not go through constant ups and downs, and maybe even take out their issues on their kids. You can't always blame the person, they're struggling but... For the children, losing that parent might be the best thing to happen to them so they can finally start their lives.
I think you can judge whether suicide is "selfish" (ugh, that word) based on whether the person committing it actually thought about the people around them. Faye's dad was obviously functional, and it doesn't seem like he ever tried to get help, so even though the pain was probably so great he had to do it, I understand Faye's anger.
But another person may have struggled with mental illness their entire life, like a really long painful cancer struggle - you know the toll it takes on that person's support system. The way I see chronic mental illness is a series of temporary deaths, you just lose that lucid person for an indeterminate amount of time, over and over and over, and it's shit. And in the end the 'cancer' wins and everyone grieves, but there's also that sense of relief because everyone was fighting so hard, and everyone was in pain, and now the person who died isn't suffering anymore. That last death is one really hard blow, free of any worry and any false hope.
[I didn't know anyone who committed suicide, just someone with bipolar disorder and a drinking problem whose liver failed - I apologise if I'm missing any added dimension when it comes to a suicide rather than a self-inflicted death.]

Some suicides are much slower than others.

--- Quote from: Inert on 24 Aug 2009, 00:37 ---There should be a thread about the worst song a suicide hotline could play as hold music.
I nominate Jump by Van Halen.
--- End quote ---
I think it would simply be a constantly shuffling playlist of the most intensely depressing emo songs ever written. The caller would always get please wait message when they call and the music would start.
I mean, a few seconds of Linkin Park makes me depressed. Not because of the lyrics, just the sound of the music in general.
On a serious note, suicide is like a dog peeing on the rug, in some cases it's on purpose, but most of the time it is someone being driven to an extreme because they can't get help and they lack the capability f solving their problems. Unlike the dog, however, if they commit suicide without any sign of depresssion, you should not feel any guilt. Sadness sure, but no beating yourself up. But if they cme up and tell you they are going to kill themselves, and you do not get help, you deserve to slapped across the face. THAT is selfish, taking away their life not only from them, but from their friends and family.
