I know they are pretty big now, but I still love the music that they have made and will continue to be a fan of new stuff that they put out until I feel that they have sold out in some way (which i don't feel that they have, even if some of you might).

Anyway, Jesse (The singer) and Vincent (guitarist) debuted one of the new songs from their fourth album, that hopefully will be coming out in the summer, at a concert in Seattle the other day. I just saw the video of it and was impressed by it, even though it is very low quality.

I thought I would see what you guys feel about either the band as a whole or just about the new song.

I remember enjoying the second album a lot when that came out. I'd be curious to hear it again sometime and see what I think nowadays. I was surprised to find Jesse Lacey covering Archers of Loaf's Web In Front and Modest Mouse's Trailer Trash on youtube, thinking back I guess I can kinda see the influence.

He does a lot of Neutral Milk Hotel covers, too. I've enjoyed their stuff for a while, but I find it hard to listen to their albums after seeing them live. The albums feel somewhat lackluster in comparison.

Yeah i consider Brand New to be my favorite band to see live. Not my favorite band, just my favorite live band.

This is great, i've been waiting for this new album for ages. Personally, i would say that TDAGARIOM is probably my favourite of the 3 albums so far.

For the live aspect, i saw them 2 years ago and they were easily the best band i saw that year live. That probably doesn't sound much but i saw more gigs that year than any other and they were far and away the best.

They are definitely in the top five for me, but I feel more like that is how they are intended to be listened to. I have to skip over the opening track on Deja Entendu ("Tautou") because the drums are just not goddamn loud enough. They opened with it when I saw them live and had the drummer from either Colour Revolt or Anathallo come out and synchronize with Brand New's drummer and it made this horrible, wonderful, thunderous war drums-type sound.

Brand New have always rocked out loud, and I'm glad that at least one mainstream punk band has the balls to evolve instead of just making the same fucking record every summer.

Your Favorite Weapon is still one of the best "I love hanging out with friends and being 16" CDs ever, but DE blew me away with it's heavy emotional tones.

D&G really floored me by how angry of a record it is and I'm still kind of digesting it, only got it two weeks ago.

So this 4th CD will most likely be awesome. I've never seen them live, but now I gotta.

Yeah each of their previous CD's have been quite different from the prior. Yet all were very awesome. Thats what i really like about them

I want to scream YES at you, but that would be out of line. Instead, I will calmly say yes, you should at least give them a(nother?) listen before writing them off.

I... I hadn't even considered them live. And now I am desperate to see how good that could be. I'm personally still a bit more attached to their earlier, less subtle stuff, but I must admit that Jesus Christ is a lyrical bullseye for me.

well, IMO, you were wrong to write them off. if you haven't even given them a listen, at least try em out and then see if they fit into your notion. IDK what kinda music you like so of course you may hate them if you don't like them. They definitely provide very quotable lyrics, which i believe is why a lot of people listen to them.

I listened to several of their songs on youtube. Basically, they sound like something I would have enjoyed 3 or 4 years ago, like standard catchy rock tunes and vaguely emotional slower songs.

Apparently they are different depending on what album you listen to or something, but they sound like every other late 90s and early 00s "Indie Rock" band to me. I generally like things that are a little more "out there" and pushing the boundaries a bit.

They aren't necessarily *bad*, but they aren't necessarily something I'm going to ever bother listening to more than once should I download or buy any of their albums.

If you're interested, here's a random sampling of stuff that's a part of my tastes in music. I generally listen to Most forms of Heavy Metal (Thrash, Death, Black, NWOBHM, Progressive, etc...), Jazz (Fusion, Free, Cool, Bop, etc..), Classical (Romantic, Impressionist, Modern, and Contemporary), Experimental, Electronica, Blues Rock, Grunge Rock, Noise Rock, and then some "Indie" and "Alternative" Rock.

That probably wouldn't even put a dent in the different kinds of music I like though. I just feel kind torn when people recommend me these newer bands like Brand New, or Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, etc...because I don't really think it's *bad*, but I'm not going to bother listening to it when I KNOW there is music out there I would enjoy listening to much more, made by truly underground artists.

I quite like Deja Entendu. From what I remember, their first album was kind of boring/all the songs sounded the same, but that was a few years ago so maybe I was wrong. As for the Devil..., I think it starts off fantastic, but I couldn't name one song of the second side if I tried (Luca? maybe?).

I have heard a lot of good things about them live, however, so maybe I'll check them out next time they come around. And yea, they're big fans of NMH. I think I have a live cover of "Holland, 1945" on my iPod Kevin Devine & Jesse Lacey did together.

Actually Head... I'll be honest, you have a good point. It's that late 90's "Indie Rock" sound really makes me love their earlier stuff, so I can see how that would be a fair point of view.

On the other hand, Devil and God are Raging Inside Me was (to my ears) much darker and more progressive, a huge step away from their other stuff. Perhaps give it a shot? Not that it really sounds like you need more music...

Yeah, it can get really same-y, but it retains appeal in its angstiness and youthfullness. Firefox's spell-checker is telling me I am either making those terms up or spelling them wrong. Oh well. "Soco Amaretto Lime" is such a pretty song.

I've only heard TDaGaRIoM. I like it. It has this noisy angry sound which I think is pretty cool. Sometimes it sounds a bit too "emo" for my tastes but the sum of its parts is pretty impressive. Not sure I'd seek out their other albums but I'd give them a chance I suppose.

I just got back from wikipedia, and apparently the title "Deja Entendu" is a reference to the fact that it sounds like every other late 90s/early 00s "indie rock" band. I thought that was pretty clever!

Oh, I could probably say Brand New are one of my favourite bands. I like all of their albums; the first one is musically not too great or original, but the lyrics are damn clever in certain places. The second has some brilliant songs on it, but on the third their musical style just became so much better.

I strongly recommend against listening to random samples of any artist's songs in order to determine whether you like them or not.
I think The Album is often a unit of itself that needs to be appreciated --- you can't just listen to parts of it to know the quality.

Hey guys, so, Brand New's new album. Daisy.

It's out in 15 days, but its already been leaked and posted here in the mediaf!re thread.. what did people think?

I liked it, I thought it had a very good sound. A few songs annoy me a bit, but they seem to have captured the whole dark sound without being as self-pitying as their last album.

After a couple of listens all the way through i am fairly disappointed with this album. Unlike the last one it has failed to grow on me as much and i would say that although not a weak album it is the weakest that Brand New have released.

For the sound i would say it takes the vocal style of Your Favourite Weapon and maps it onto the musical style of Deja Entendu. This maybe sounds like a good match but really it just provides a strange melodic backing to angsty lyrics which doesn't really work as well as i had hoped it would.

Still, if you haven't heard it yet it is worth at least one listen through and its definitely possible that a lot of other people will like it.

I'd have to disagree with the vocals bit.. Its a lot less pop-punk and a lot more scream-ey.

I have listened to the album 3 full times and i enjoy it more and more each time I believe. The first four songs are all greats, songs that I would throw on a mixtape of Brand New's best songs without hesitation.

It's hard to label it as their best so quickly after it being put out, but time could end up telling that it is my favorite.

I thought The Devil and God was pretty much not worth owning. Their first two records are fantastic, with Deja Entendu being one of my favorite albums to just listen all the way through. I think Daisy is rad, but I don't know how I feel about it compared to their other body of work and on the whole as an album.

Maybe! You like Why? don't you? They're not a million miles away, but with less hip-hop in the vocals (well, except for when Dose One and Why? do guest shots). They can be a little of a mixed bag to be honest, but when they're good they're really good. Also, they are/were ex-Canvas so there's some UKHC nerd fact appeal.

Also fuck yes early Alkaline Trio is incredible. I never cared about Brand New back in the day and after checking a few youtube videos my opinion has not altered.

Oh, and you can just use my proper name. This one is a bit long really, but there's another Will about so I can't have my real one.

I think I may check out the new album. I haven't listened to the last one, but I still really like some of their songs from the first two albums. The No Seatbelt Song is still one of my favorites.
