Though you should under no circumstances EVER ford the river, cocking and bloating the wagon is pretty dangerous as well. I generally lose the baby caulking and floating. Springing for the ferry generally results in success and doesn't cost much money, if I recall correctly.
If you are broke though, you should certainly do the penising.

I ford rivers all the god damned time Oregon Trail. You'll usually lose some time but you'll rarely ever lose any food, and that's the important thing.
