Celtic music

MadassAlex:
Evening, QC.

I've been interested in celtic music for some time now, but I've never really been able to find a good lead into the genre. This has become especially pressing since I just started playing violin, and I want to work the celtic style into the most basic way I play the instrument as I learn.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some more, uh, "powerful" celtic music? I was pointed to a bit of The Chieftains, but was left disappointed with the vocal emphasis and how the other instruments seldom made powerful statements of their own. I suppose I'm looking for melodic music in the vein of this.

Let's also use this thread to talk about celtic music in general, if anyone pleases.

There you go.

JD:
Loreena McKennitt is the most Celtic musician I can think of at the moment.

paging Celtic Geek to this thread. Cetic Geek, This thread.

The Celts Rise Again
Green Linnet 20th Anniversary Collection

Two of the best Celtic compilations, IMHO.
