Common UK terminology - it could apply to me, of course, though I don't think I'm the naive user it implies, having been using computers since 1966.

"Tell us a stooooory, unca' Paul..."

OK, you asked for it.

The first program of my own I wrote on the university computer (yes, the university computer) investigated numbers in a loop.  I wanted to write a line to the printer each thousand times round the loop (computers were slow in those days, 'K?) so that I knew where to start my next run.  Naturally I wanted to keep things tidy, so I wrote something like:

Code: [Select]
if loopct mod 1000 = 0 then
begin
  open lineprinter;
  write loopct;
  close lineprinter
end;

(this is Algol-60 when it was modern).  I got a very rude note from the operators; they'd stopped the job after a couple of minutes (I'd booked 15 minutes) because of the amount of paper it was using - each time it printed a number, it:

(1) threw a page
(2) printed an opening banner page
(3) printed a single number on the next page
(4) printed a closing banner page
(5) threw another page.

Five sheets of paper for each number...

And have you ever dropped a stack of punched cards which were not interpreted (i.e., which didn't have the punched characters also printed across the top), and had to sort them into order again by reading the holes?  No, I thought not...

I can't compete with Paul here but I remember using a computer which was just a black screen with green text in the early 90s. My personal website dates back to 1993. I've had the same mobile number since 1998 as well. I typed some of my essays on a typewriter (not even an electronic one). What I'm saying is that I was born about two decades late.

Ah, VAXen.  I remember when we were in the middle of automating a bunch of things and we had PDP-xx, VAXen, and all manner of computers sitting around.

At one point I had a PDP-11 all to myself, to play with.

The Oxford university computer was an English Electric Leo Marconi KDF9:

It was bigger than the one in that picture, because it had a (fixed-head) disk - and that picture doesn't include a line printer either.  It pre-dated the PDP-8 by some years, let alone the PDP-11 or Vax.

I wish I'd gotten into computers before I started minding my newspaper's computer in 1983, knowing nothing at all but having great telephone support.

On the other hand, I was flirting via teletype with a clerk in the Reichhold Chemicals hq in Tarrytown NY when I worked at a Western Union office there in the summer of 1956.

It lasted 2-3 days until she told me she was married with kids. I was 19.

I suspect I've told this in another thread. My inner send key with wear and tear has developed a bounce problem.

Just look at hackerspaces.org, that's a good overview. There you can also find a picture of the hackerspace I usually frequent. Just look at my hometown.

It says we have a hackerspace in our 3D printer lab, which I am almost certain is not true. Then again, anyone walking past it would get to the right place anyway.

list of all hackerspace's page sorting is broken. every time i sort the list it won't display anythign past the B's, and then won't sort anymore at all >_<

tried in multiple browsers, multiple devices.

Same problem.

And I used to type letters on type writers. In fact, I learned the QWERTZ keyboard on them.
One using typebars and the other using a typeball. I remember playing with the shift key on the latter. (What the shift key does is simply turning the ball by so and so many (180?) degrees, making an unmistakable sound.)

Loving all the old computer nostalgia. Those were the days, huh?

I've been putzing around with them for as long as I can remember. I used to play all the old DOS games on my dad's pc- I was obsessed with Mixed Up Mother Goose lol. I would play anything that was put in front of me- after a while, Mother Goose was replaced by Carmen San Diego, which was eventually replaced by Doom and Quake. Quite the motley crew of characters hahaha

I remember when my dad gave me his old computer, after he upgraded to one that used Windows 95. I was 9 and I thought I was the coolest kid around.  :-P

Ohhhhh look what I found.....

Thanks everybody!

Apparently the google translate is rather accurate in this case, though it has a bit of trouble with German official speech.

Here's an improved Google translation:

Quote
Dear Mr. [...]

Your declaration of acceptance of a place at university has just been received. We are pleased that you have decided to study at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

After successful assignment of the semester fee and verification of documents required for enrollment, you will be enrolled. In the course of this a student record and a KIT-Card (student ID) will be created for you, the latter which will be sent in a few days by post. You will also receive a separate letter of the Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC) with your access to the student portal of the KIT. This may take several days. If you have not received a card or access data before the semester begins, please contact the Welcome Desk.

For further questions, the clerks of the student service are at your disposal.  Find the right contact for you at http://www.kit.edu/studieren/1960.php

You are brand new at KIT? The KIT Career Services welcomes you with a KIT-backpack as a welcome gift! All students who are newly enrolled for the winter semester 2013/2014 at KIT will shortly receive a voucher by e-mail for the backpack to pick up at the central distribution between 14th to 18th of October between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm in the foyer of the auditorium.

We wish you all the best and great success for your selected program.

With best regards from Karlsruhe

Hehe, I'll admit, I'm intrigued by the offer that students get 50% off from tickets at the concert hall. I might not be the greatest fan of opera, but I love chamber and orchestral music.

I still happily remember the one concert I heard at the Alsion concert hall in Sønderborg in Denmark (Münchener Kammerorchester and Dutch solo cellist Pieter Wispelwey played Schumann (Cellokonzert in A-Moll), Ligeti (Ramifications for Strings) and Beethoven (4. Sinfonie and Coriolan Ouvertüre)). That is the greatest concert hall I've ever seen. The acoustics are phenomenal.

Yes, at schools that have a fucked up late-add process. Or professors who don't want to commit to adds, so hopes the problem fixes itself with the application of a little bit of time.

During my first run through university, I never was able to figure out the fucking financial aid system. I qualified for a state grant, but the grant date was after registration, and if you paid the fees yourself, the grant was not allowed to be reimbursed for cash for already paid fees. So I had to add all my classes when the semester started, which was always a nightmare, with the added complication that the add form for ALL the classes had to be turned in at once. So one semester, one professor dithered until something like week 5, which meant that when I turned in the complete add form, I THEN had to go to the dean of each department to petition for the OTHER super late adds to be accepted, even though those professors had signed on first week. The Dean of the Math department then had the gall to say to me, "
Why have you been attending all these classes illegally." And it was pretty clear he meant that as an actual crime and not just an administrative term. As shy and timid as I was back then, I was literally in shock at what I had just heard, and I just stared at him saying nothing until he finally looked down, signed the paper and said "don't let this happen again."

To this day over 25 years later, as much as working in retail and now media has eliminated just about all of my shyness and public speaking fears, sometimes the idea of walking into a strange office for administrative tasks or presenting paperwork makes me sick to my stomach with anxiety even when I intellectually know that nothing bad is going to happen.

Well, the way it works here is classes fill up instantly. There is a wait list you can get on, which can be up to 50% the size of the "full" class. It's up to the teacher what they do with waitlisted students - just use them to fill in the holes left by students who drop the class, take on a few extra, a handful, some crazy people even take on everyone (usually only if there's a high drop rate. If they want to get into the class, waitlisted students have to do everything a normal student does,  but doesn't receive credit until they're actually accepted into the class - IF they're accepted into the class. If the wait list of full, however, you have to "crash" the class - attend anyway, just like a student or a waitlister, but instead of trying to get into the class, you're trying to get onto the waitlist. And unlike a waitlisted student, who there are actually rules and regulations around, a crasher is accepted in only at the good will of the teacher.

I've had students sitting on the windowsills in the past, waiting for a spot to open up.  One of the biggest reasons was that I was teaching the only afternoon section of the class - the early morning sections still had plenty of spots open.

Other times it was because I was teaching the only section of a course required for some major or other's graduations requirement, and it was full of seniors who'd put it off to the last minute, so the freshman and sophomores trying to take it when they should have done so were waiting.  This created a self-perpetuating system that another section would have taken care of...

I really liked teaching the Friday early morning lab session. Only six students signed up, and most of them actually cared about their work, because the timing of the session filtered out the students who were just there to party. I did get one guy who signed up because it was the only session that had space when he enrolled, and he liked to complain about how it crimped into his Thursday night drinking time, though.

At least he was complaining it cut into his time, rather than continued and whined he was tired/hungover/drunk from the night before.

More complaining about my course, even though I like it and am hoping my current information is wrong. I'm currently doing a foundation degree in a community college. It's actually a university course offered through this college, so it's the same as a university course but not as specialised. I intentionally chose to do it to avoid or minimise the need for going to a proper university. Personal reasons for that I won't get into here.
I can finish this year, get my foundation degree and stop. I can also do one more year (for a total of three) at the actual university and get a Bachelors of Arts. At the start of the year this was the option I was leaning towards.
Turns out the third year barely touches film and web and basically everything other than audio. I was told it would be more like the year I just did, with the option to specialise in something. The course coordinator was a musician, so something like 4 - 8 of the possible modules will be audio based. Out of 12. I have no interest in audio at all. I want to do filming and editing. While it would be nice to get the letters next to my name, the actual course won't be worth much when I'm trying to get relevant work. Norn' Eire is very small, anywhere you can get work in media knows what each university dedicates to mostly.

So I think I'm going to end up stopping at this year, getting a degree that is equivalent to a university qualification but people won't respect because of where I got it OR ending up having to do two to five years of university anyway. When I already had the qualifications to start doing so last year. Argh.

Talk to the guy.  Tell him about your interests.  Maybe he can tailor the course projects a bit for you - audio for movies is a thing, after all.

Unfortunately the audio courses are more music and radio based. So some of the skills are somewhat translatable for film but I, and most of the class, are not music orientated which makes the course a lot harder. Even the course I'm currently doing had three audio modules last year out of the six we did. We did get the chance to give the feedback we did basically the same thing three times.
The guy has actually left and no one will be appointed for this year, as far as I know, so they're sitting on his old plan for now. The representative I talked to says the higher-ups have no intent in changing anything drastically for next year. The people the year ahead are stuck in the same position.
Maybe if we kick up enough of a fuss we'll at least bring down the amount of audio or at least get more into the film aspect rather than just music. Also I don't know where I got 4-8 out of 12. It'd be more 2-4 out of six. May have been thinking of the two year course.

Registered for classes. Retaking spanish from 1.5 semester ago. Retaking calc 1 from last semester. Adding physics so I only have three classes but 12.5 credits.

Remember the good old days when you could tell school was back in session at colleges and universities by the drastic increase in traffic to various websites?

I got an email from the new uni with details of how to do the online registration and a provisional timetable (I get Wednesdays and Fridays off, and we finish at 3 the other days, so lots of self-directed study time, which I plan on using so that I don't have to work at weekends). How exciting! It's really confusing though, all acronyms and no key. I've managed to guess some of them from the module titles but have no idea at all what one of them is. I guess I'll find out in three weeks when I START TRAINING TO BE A MIDWIFE OH MY GOODNESS.

its the traffic here. At start-of-school time range and end-of-school time range (give and take an hour each way) all freeways and exits slow to a crawl or worse. Luckily, my first class on any given day (and my dad's shift start, which is relevant because he drives me) is at 9:15, so we only get the tail end of the traffic.

Classes start tomorrow, which is also my birthday. I guess that could go under complaints, along with having homework due the first day of class. I'm a little terrified but also excited.

Lucky me, I start school the day after my birthday. Or not so lucky, considering I can't go out drinking on my birthday... I'll just throw a start of school/birthday party on monday...

You could go out the night before your birthday, and as long as you stay out past midnight you're out drinking on your birthday. It's what I did last year when my birthday was on a Sunday, I went out with everyone Saturday night and they sang happy birthday at midnight.

I could, but I have work on saturday which lasts till deep in the night. And I live a pretty far away from where I study, so I'll just wait for monday, and go drinking with all my friends from dorm and school.
