The hand off to the QB is sideways.

Better description: the center can only transfer the ball to another player to start the play by pushing or "snapping" the ball between his legs.

St Mary's had a cool trick play for years where they would silent audible, and the QB would immediately place the ball between the guard's knees.  He'd then audible, and some bizarre play feint would go off.  Somewhere in the middle, the guard would grab the ball and start running.

That's called the "fumblerooski", after a play done in the NCAA by, I believe, Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

(Quick look - Wow, that was all the way back in 1984? I feel old.)

The QB hiked the ball, put it down on the ground, and the right guard grabbed it, picked it up and ran into the end zone.

It was outlawed shortly thereafter.

Illegal move in pro football.

I never get why people think that rugby is more bad-ass. To me, soccer and rugby with their continued play are just way softer than two mammoth teams, half of the players chosen for size and strength, bashing into each other 70 times a game in head-on colissions.

There seem to be two schools of thought.

1. If a sport requires more padding, it is a result of the sport being so tough.
2. Less padding makes a sport tougher because unprotected athletes are more macho.
