Tour de France is the biking equivalent of a Formula One race. Lots of flash and dash, but everyone knows who's going to win before the race even starts.

Just a couple of comments on this. You do realise that the Iditarod is inspired by the efforts of a Norwegian don't you? It's also been won by both Swiss and Norwegian competitors. In fact getting from point A to Point B in Alaska in the middle of February/March might be considered very similar to the same in Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland, all European countries and all of which used dog sleds for transport in winter.

And if everyone knows who's going to win the Tour de France then perhaps you can tell us who's going to get this year's Yellow, Green, Polka Dot and White jerseys, the Combativity award and each of the individual stages. We'll see if you're right in three weeks time.

None of this changes the fact that the Iditarod and dog sled racing, a global sport in which there really is NO Amateur status (frankly if you're going to survive the sheer amount of time and money required makes it a second job, never mind WIN) makes the Tour de France look like the Tour de Chumps in terms of toughness.

The Seldom Killer:
I think that shows a gross lack of understanding of what it takes to complete the Tour de France and by extension being a year round professional cyclist.

GarandMarine:
I think cyclists can get fed to my huskies.

Barmymoo:
Guys, calm down. This is a thread to discuss sports that you like. If you don't enjoy a particular sport, don't join in the discussion.

You sounded different about fair weather fans about 3 months ago.

--- Quote from: Patrick on 01 Apr 2014, 03:40 ---Great, baseball season again. Ugh. I fucking hate baseball. Never heard of a sport that had more of an overwhelmingly self-righteous attitude among the fanbase, and the following is my story.

I spent 3 years of my life trying to learn about baseball because I found it interesting. After having never grown up around sports, followed by 5 years of living in Europe, where baseball is almost unheard of, it was fascinating, exhilarating. I moved back to the U.S. in 2009, my best friend (a Giants fan) got me started watching baseball at the start of 2010, and lo and behold, SF wins the World Series. I was stoked, because my best friend was stoked. The overwhelming majority of baseball fans, upon the discovery that I was a new fan, accused me of being title residue, nothing but some shithead bandwagon fan. Never felt more belittled by something so trivial in my entire life.

I'm just one man, so my absence from the ranks of baseball fans won't impact the sport. But I am still a man, with every right to enjoy a sport for my own reasons, regardless of how long I've been a fan. Treat new fans with patience and respect. Don't bully them into not liking the sport altogether.

That was different. I had just moved back to the U.S. after 5 years overseas. Before moving overseas, the only sport I knew anything about was American football. I had just learned about a new sport that I found interesting. That's very different from being a fairweather fan.
