I think that at least one good thing came out of this thread though, and that is the physics/science thread.

I learned about 8-bit music. Another good thing! And then I wikipedia-surfed and found out that there are metalcore/8-bit bands and yesssss.

I'm wondering, has anyone come across any Engineer themed music? I've just been watching a few Doctor Who themed music videos on YouTube and there's some good musical selections. I am a scientist by the Dandy Warhols works well for the Doctor but now I'm hankering for a tune or two that works for Engineers.

It almost sounds like the sort of thing Abney Park might do but Airship Pirates wasn't that mechanically oriented.

Are Horse the Band Nintendocore? One of those things sounds like something I like, the other is a band I know I'm not keen on.

Also Mark: I know what I'm for. you don't need to.  :-) (Smiley inserted so sillyness can be confirmed and the joke is not confused for being obtuse or evasive.) I also want to know what you mean by Engineer themed music? I would suggest some soundtracks if you mean what I think you mean...(The commando theme tune has some awesome classical music sounding like mechanical things.)

Thanks Eliza! It's really nice to know when someone's said something that she is definitely intending to be amusingly enigmatic. It's certainly a conversational weight off of my mind!

Music wise, "I am a scientist" or " She blinded me with science" or "Weird Science" are all science themed music. Things like "Man for all seasons" are James Bond themed music. I was just wondering if anyone had run into any "Engineers are awesome" music. Music that namechecks the profession essentially.

In other news? Last night's 'House' = Exceptional, if predictable.

Oh, and I'd like to second Johnny C's motion.

I have three two songs in my library that mention the word engineer, both Coheed and Cambria, and neither of them are particularly favourable :-( The third one is Anti-Flag, but the lyric is actually "engineered", a different thing all together. I must remember to put "" around search terms...

Oh how I wish I could be drinking, too.  Instead, I've got to do quantum optics homework (which is really the opposite of drinking) that I don't really know how to do (I'm going to guess).  It's so awesome and cold in my apartment that my fingers are having trouble moving.

I should be writing reviews, I'm watching Demetri Martin on youtube and drinking beer, cheap beer, cheap tasty beer. It is fun, but not productive. I do however have warm fingers (Only because my housemate is away, so I've got the fire lit, yeah!)

Liz, I agree with all of your statements.  Well, I guess except for them turning the heat on in my building.  I suppose they have in yours though, so there's that.

I put on some fingerless wool glove inserts that I bought for playing paintball (after getting hit in the hands a number of times).  Typing in them feels hilarious.  I don't have a fever, but my hands do feel just like two balloons.

Also, I might just give up on the homework though it's "due" tomorrow (it's just the professor grading our homeworks, and I he hasn't even handed back the one due two weeks ago, so I'm not sure if he actually does anything).  Bombay Sapphire is calling me to make a martini.

I only drink once a year but I have to say I can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive beer. They all taste pretty much the same to me.

Fingerless gloves... I have them but they just make my fingertips feel even colder than not wearing gloves in the first place.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure that even the most inexperienced drinker could tell the difference between Laker Lager and, say, Corona or Guiness.  I'm guessing maybe you just haven't had any truly terrible beers yet.

if plenty of people can't tell the difference between corona and a legitimately good beer (and plenty can't, I assure you as a professional) why would you expect they'd be able to tell the difference between a corona and whatever hillbilly beer you're talking about?

I follow you saying corona is a crappy beer, and so it will not taste that much different from other crappy beers yess.

I'd ask what you think is an awesome beer but it will probably consist of mostly stuff from microbreweries and that will make me sad because I think I live pretty far from you, and so won't be able to get them.

actually, do you know any good canadian beers, then.

I dunno, I regard Corona with lime as being a good "restaurant beer".  There's no chance of it getting you even slightly tipsy (and I'm a lightweight), and at the same time, it tastes completely inoffensive.  win/win in that situation.

no I actually drink Tooheys extra dry because it comes out of the tap cold and is cheap and if you bring a carton of it to a party nobody is going to call you a cheapskate or alternatively a poofter.

What I am saying is that how much beer you drink doesn't necessarily reflect your ability to make distinctions between different beers at all regardless of quality.

For example the other week some idiot hooked up a keg of XXXX to the Coopers Pale Ale line (I guess I would consider that a legitimately good beer, I don't go in for microbrews because I don't have money and also don't really drink beer that much) and it stayed that way for a few hours until someone finally complained. It took about three hours for someone to notice the difference between two beers that not only taste very different, but also look nothing alike.

I'm saying that the vast majority of people do not give a shit about how beer tastes, is what I am saying. It's awesome if you can or at the very least have intentions to learn how though! Pro tip if you decide to become a beer wanker: If someone says they do not really like beer that much, do not insist they try whatever weird micro brew you are into lately before that opinion can be considered legitimate. Nobody likes that guy.

What I hate most about corona is the clear bottles, a tragic choice for a beer that's likely to be left in the sun by dopey freshman.

On the flipside what I like the most about Corona is the cartons are stapled on the bottom meaning that I move house exclusively using them as boxes nowadays.

Fair enough.  the only experience that I was speaking from was my own, and that based on having the two different kinds of beers one directly after another (and before I had drunk anything else.  Beer tending to taste even more the same when you're drunk, obviously)

see only people who want to be beer wankers actually drink like that.

(if you are offended by the term "beer wanker" it is just because it's a lot easier to type than "beer connoisseur")

Also I don't know why a Corona would get you any less drunk than any other full strength beer, but that is psychology coming into play I guess.

funny, I really almost never drink.  And it wasn't so much an active decision as finishing one beer and then accepting a glass of some random beer from a friend.

anyways, I'm sorry for derailing this thread so much

on the upside, I feel more at home on here when I'm slightly tipsy (ie. right now) than I did sober. yay

Telling the difference between Bitters, Stouts and Lagers is one thing, but then you have the difference between, say Budweiser and Stella Artois, Heineken or Kronenberg 1664. I did hear somewhere that the recommended temperature for serving beer is the same as the temperature at which your tastebuds begin to lose their ability to differentiate flavour so it minimizes the bitter taste.

Might as well just get a Cider.

Oooh yeah, cider. I really can tell the difference between brands of cider...my preference usually leans towards the dry end, but usually all you can get in pubs round here is Bulmer's or Strongbow, and they are basically the same.  :-(

Better than what you get in the US.  Most people here like sugary things, so "dry" is used only to describe an empty glass of cider here, unfortunately.  I am a beer wanker, but I only like beer that tastes good.  I don't give a shit how "rare" or "exclusive" or micro-brew-y it is.  I just want something that I enjoy, which ends up being a lot of different types.  Though, for cheap beer I'm going to actually take the "hipster" route and go with PBR.  It's really not as bad as the price suggests.

Corona is a dredful beer, Guiness is a pretty terrible stout (Although I drink it a lot as it's available.)

I would also like to state that the botanicals in Bombay make it just about the WORST gin for a martini, although it is very nice in a not Gordons sort of a way. That is not just my opinion it is mixologist fact.

The beer was drinking is sort of like PBR but for one specific postcode of one city in the North of England. Orangeboom can be awesome on draught and truly lovely, but it's always dirt cheap in a can, doesn't taste the same, but drinkable. I miss Netto booze deals & I miss Buckfast, drinking all this classy stuff is no fun...(Hence the Vit D)

actually, do you know any good canadian beers, then.

Depends on where you are in Canada.  In Quebec - Unibroue makes a number of quality beers, with varying levels of alcoholic content (La Fin du Monde for a fun night).  St. Ambroise makes some which are fairly good, particularly St Ambroise Noir (my favourite stout?). Skipping over to B.C. - I'm a big fan of some of the beers by the Granville Island Brewing (better for easy drinking, sweeter beers, like their Robson Street Hefeweizen, Cypress Honey Lager, and Kitsilano Maple Cream Ale), Phillips Brewing (they make a tremendous IPA, one of my favourite beers), and Cannery Brewing (Naramata Nut Brown Ale is a very good dark ale, and the Anarchist Amber Ale is also excellent).

I know very very little about beer elsewhere in Canada.  Unless you want to talk about Moosehead or Alexander Keith's or something.

a local brewery around here makes this shit called Sculler's Reserve, and it is basically all the pain and anguish from the history of mankind distilled into something resembling a beer.
i think it's actually made by having some homeless guy drink a bunch of shitty IPAs from the store and then piss into bottles that say "Scullers" on them.

not recommended unless you are a masochist with almost no taste buds.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Guiness... I drink it a lot as it's available.

I will never ever stop being amazed that I once encountered a bartender who didn't know how to pronounce Guiness.

Great, now we're setting up Death Panels to decide which posters live and which die.
