Holy crap, last week it was still possible not to wear gloves and a scarf when you went outside, then suddenly, two days ago your ears would freeze off if you were outside for more than 15 minutes, and now everything is covered in a foot of snow, just like that! It's been a long time since that happened around here.

Like that, except it reversed itself again. We got barely any snow.

Woo its snowing here in East Anglia!! Me and Vicky just went to a little park near our house and made a snowman at 1am. It took a lot of convincing but I got her out in it eventually, and a total stranger threw a snowball at me and I threw one back and man I get really excited about snow. Only problem is it will probably rain first thing tomorrow morning and by the time I wake up it will be slushhh :(

Seattle gets snow maybe once every five years. This past week it was a constant 22 degrees, so we got our hopes up, but as it snowed last year, the weather's back to 40 and rainy.

My weather is probably the same for the most part, I live only 100 miles away.  Give or take.

First Snow of the year here in good ole' Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA:

This was about halfway through a storm that covered the city in 10.2 inches (almost 14 inches in other places of the state!) of the nasty, cold, brutally beautiful white stuff. The picture is of my street, and the little dot in the middle of the snow-covered sidewalk all the way in the distance is my youngest brother sledding backwards down the hill.

Holy crap! It snowed like, 10cm here and the country is breaking down! (Dutch people dont handle snow to well) Trains at Utrecht Central (which is like, the spider in the web of railways here) just stopped going between 15:30 and 20:00. This is also the busiest station we have...

Thankfully, i convinced the people i was with that we might as well go and have a few beers and eat something and sit in a nice warm place :)

Hahaha, you guys are so cute when it snows.

Seriously, we got 4 inches last year and the entire city shut down. Being born and raised in Chicago, I was so confused - it'd take a blizzard with gale-force winds to stop anything from running there. In Seattle, it's common practice to run around in circles shrieking once the flakes start to fall.

Yeah, I remember one time when I was in Seattle when there was less than an inch of snow. You could still see the grass sticking out of the snow, and yet they shut down all schools in the area and the people were driving at absurdly slow speeds.

Yeah DC is totally shut down. Metro stopped running trains to outdoor platforms at 1pm, and the news said cops were on the highway ramps making people turn around and go home instead of getting on the highway. Last I measured, we had 17.5 inches of snow in the back yard. My car has disappeared even further since this photo, now you can only see the top of the tire and a sliver of the hubcap.

So, I am going to DC on Monday (to hang out with family, and stuff like that).  Will I be confronted by a city that will still have too much snow that they don't know how to deal?  Last time I remember getting six inches (maybe '02?), the entire metro area shut down for about a week.

So I ended up with 19 inches out where I am on this one.  I've gotten more snow on me before, but never living in Virginia as I was in Europe for the 96 blizzard. Spent all damn day yesterday shoveling.  My wife called and said that once you're out of our neighborhood the main road is still slick as shit.   I really wish I could work from home today, but I can't.  I expect that once I make it to 95 it'll be fine, but the backasswards rural jerkwater that I live in will be a mess for days.

Thank God I live in Finland... At least our cities won't shutdown during snowstorms. People just pretty much ignore it as an normal winter occurrence.

Same with Rochester.  Always the first snow has people ridiculously scared because they seem to forget what that white stuff coming down from the sky is.  After that, it's business as usual for a number of months.  The only problems with snow arise when the infrastructure is not in place to deal with it, due to there being absolutely no reason to have it in a place that might get a foot of snow per year.

We don't even get snow in oklahoma. We get ice. It pretty much is just dry and cold all winter except when it rains four inches because it is 50F in the day time and then 10F in the evenings. then everything is covered in a layer of ice for a week or two and no one cares. I spend those days sliding around in parking lots.

there has been lots of snow here in England. I have fallen on my arse quite a lot. I invested in some snow boots. they are good for snow, but once the snow thins and there is just ice, they are bollocks and I fall on my arse.

Oxford is bounded by blocked roads and stuff, but doesn't have even enough snow of its own to clog my bicycle brakes.  Cold though, but the wind has stopped which makes it much less biting.  But the temperature still goes over 0C most days - in the winter after I was born, it stayed below freezing for six weeks (not that I remember that!).

The only thing remarkable about the cold and snow in the UK, such as it is, is the extent to which the entire country is unprepared for this seasonal weather, in spite of forecasts, YET AGAIN!

It just wouldn't be the same if we were all prepared though. Then what would we complain about?

Up north we are having flurries of snow but nothing is sticking and the rain is washing most of it away. The bits that stay though always manage to turn into ice and cause me to have to use a skating action to walk properly.

It snowed last night and I was literally about to go outside to shovel the sidewalk when I heard scraping outside. My downstairs neighbor was already shoveling, damn I feel guilty. At least it was the teenage girl doing it, and not the old lady.

Apparently last night the coldest place in Britain was Benson, about five miles from me, which was -17.7C [= 0F].  No wonder the brakes on my bike were frozen.

To the above post and the post above that one: Holy crap.

The Netherlands was just recovering from the ten centimetres of snow that fell two weeks ago, breaking public transport everywhere for no obvious reasons. Then the thaw sets in, that damn thaw that sneaks up on you by clearing all the snow but leaving a half millimetre coating of ice on the pavement making it look dry while it's slippery as hell, got my bike swiped out from under me twice that day. And just when everyone thinks it's over, the next day white flakes fall merrily from the sky and we're back to square one. Still, I prefer the snow to the wind and rain that's raging outside right now. Good thing I don't have to go back to university until monday...

I just got the image of a midwife and a woman giving birth swinging towards each other on a trapeze - when they meet, the midwife pulls the baby out. The knife juggler is standing on the floor and cuts the umbilical cord with a a knifethrow.
