One of my colleagues at my first job was a soviet emigree who spent his adolescence under Stalin.  His stock line was, "(With an attitude like that), you wouldn't have lasted very long under Stalin."

He was lucky he was an academic at a technical institute before he got out.  They were tolerated. 

Scary shit, man.
