I could never get into Jawbox, but Colossal's cover of this song is pretty good.

They're also a pretty perfect case study of the mid-90's "beloved indie rock band signs with a major label; major label proceeds to have no idea what to do with them because their thought-process ended with 'hey these guys sound kinda like Nirvana, we'll just..... Nirvana them. How did Geffen do that again? We should figure that out';  band is shunned by their original fanbase of rocknroll assholes for jumping ship;  band gets boned in both ends" phenomenon.

YOU'RE NOT PUNK AND I'M TELLING EVERYONE

wait guys, sorry

wrong band

--- Quote from: Ptommydski on 08 Oct 2009, 08:56 ---I don't think that's entirely accurate. Jawbox and Shudder to Think are both anomalies because they made their best work once they had both left Dischord, whereas most other bands created newer material which wasn't as good and suffered as a result. Without major label funding, For Your Own Special Sweetheart and Pony Express Record would not exist. Dischord would never have funded either band to stay in the studio for a couple of months spending thousands of dollars, which actually happened to work pretty well for these two bands specifically. Temporarily freed from the constraints of budget, they produced their respective masterpieces. It did lead to the disillusion of both bands but there's an argument to be made that it was ultimately worth it to see those records made because they are practically unique.

That's certainly true, but I'd argue that just makes it all the more interesting a case-study, since the end result was no different than that of the bands who went major and released watery, compromised albums.
