Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes.

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don’t just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."
--James D. Nicoll

Funny, but given that English is an amalgam of Saxon and Norman French, with whatever words borrowed from various Indian dialects, and from whatever people were being militarily abused by the English at that time it is also true.

Also whatever people were militarily abusing the English, i.e. don't forget the lovrly Romans, or the vikings, and dear old Cnut.

And for some reason, when I read the latest poll, the last option came into my brain as 'bear.' What that means, I do not know, save that I've perhaps been reading SPQR Blues too much.

Border Reiver:
Well, according to Jeph bears are a solution to many of life's problems.  I just thought that beer would be less permanent, or painful.

Near Lurker:
Thurston Moore?  I thought that was Lou Reed...

Kugai:
Well, at least he survived intact.

I expected to see him buried under a mountain of Fangirls/boys all vying for his underwear.

Akima:
"Screechy guitar noise". That's the technical term, I take it.

Wasn't Thurston Moore the guy who bought up dozens of cheap old guitars and modified them to make all sorts of interesting noises?
