V

Chesire Cat:
It just means its set in a shared universe with Battlestar Galactica. Its like Star Wars Episode I and Star Wars Episode IV. Sure it's set in the same universe, but is it the same at all? Not even close.

Without the characters we know and love we are robbed with an integral part of what it once was. Frankly if you want to make another "BSG" (Im using quotes to say, the next series to fill its considerable void), you are better off creating a new and rich world, realizing the world is as much fun as realizing the characters. And the fact that the new BSG is a remake in itself, but it was a generational gap between the two.

I feel your pain. If you're craving hard-SF TV, I'd recommend Babylon 5. Hulu is streaming the first two seasons and The WB's website is rotating hosting seasons every month (this month they're back to season one). It's not as polished or dark as BSG, but it has all the elements of a great show - finely crafted characters, overarching plotlines, and a real sense of direction. Series creator and showrunner John Michael Straczynski wrote 92 out of B5's 110 episodes, and it's been described as a novel for television.

Of course, SF being what it was in the 90's, the first season is pretty campy. Add on the fact that the actor portraying the commanding officer in the first season is absolutely atrocious and it's a little hard to get into. But I guarantee if you stick it out, about midway through season 2 you'll be absolutely hooked.

I say all of this, assuming of course, that you haven't seen it already. If you have, my bad. If you haven't, definitely check it out.

Also: the prequel TV-movie pilot is terrible, terrible, terrible. Just read a synopsis and start with ep1.

Ozymandias:
B5 is a highly lauded and fairly mediocre show. I will grant that it was one of the first sci-fi shows to ever reach that sort of epic scale, but goddamn it had bad dialogue, bad acting, and bad CGI.

I will agree, though. If you manage to stick out season 1(good luck; took me three tries) the rest of the show is worth your time.

Anyhow. I liked The Plan. It was like a bunch of moderately interesting deleted scenes loosely tied together by a narrative of two Cavils.

I'm ambivalent about V right now. I will watch the four episode mini-season thing they're doing then decide if I'm going to continue watching it. I still enjoy Flash Forward, the other show packed with ex-Firefly, Lost, and BSG actors on ABC, though.

scarred:
By 1990's standards, the CGI was awesome.

But yeah it's pretty awful.

Chesire Cat:
Im ok with there being a BSG sized hole in my life. Ill shelf it like Deadwood and Cowboy Bebop as beautiful one-offs.
