Ah screw it, I'm going to anyway. Get some Count Basie recordings from the late 30s and the early to mid fifties.

there's a ska/core band called Public Access. they're pretty heavy, and have some killer horns in most of their songs, as well as some nice bass. I'd check em out.

I personally haven't heard anyone else quite like them, so if anyone has heard of some other bands like these guys let me know as well!
