Yeah, but it's like the email and instant chat are merged. So instead of typing a message then pressing send, by default it will appear for them in real time, as you're typing. But it has an email kinda structure and has rich text formatting. Also embedded videos and junk. And reply to parts of a message rather than reply to the whole message. It's hard to explain. And you can edit other people's messages, like a wiki/google doc.

To be honest, as cool as it is conceptually I don't know a single person who is using it for any reason other than software development.  This will probably change though.

Google's ultimate goal is basically to obsolete email and replace Gmail and gtalk with Google Wave keep in mind, so it's not surprising that it has a lot in common with gmail/gtalk.

There's also the fact that it's still an early build and therefore doesn't have any real settings to customize waves for more specific uses, so I imagine some of the funtionality will expand greatly in the coming months.
