I first heard about it reading http://dresdencodak.com. Among other things, it would help you understand why the remark above that Hanners wants to be a normal girl, "or Kimiko Ross", is so damn funny. That Wikipedia page had a great quote, though, someone dismissing the concept of the singularity as "The Rapture for nerds".

Shmee:
The art today looks GREAT!  Hanners in panel 3 is brilliantly done.  The anatomy, the expression.  Everything about it.  It sounds weird, but I think that one panel may be one of the best moments, so far, of the art in the whole comic.

Congratulations, Jeph!  You have come a LONG way and the art is looking fantaaastic!

And it fits your Avatar perfectly, Carl-E. ;)

You'll be asking Jeph to chew your food for you next, or at least stick to fart jokes...  :-D

Maybe I'll go sit in the corner with my unchewed plate of food. ;o;

Part of your issue may simply be that the Singularity applies generally to all fields of human inquiry, which is of course incredibly vast. It's easier to go field by field; for instance, the Singularity for programming is generally considered to be the first self sufficient AI, when we will have effectively created something smarter than ourselves. Most in the field believe this will probably happen before 2050- and that's pessimistically.

The term means different things to different people, but essentially the Singularity is the point past which we can no longer predict what will happen. We know AIs are coming- whether they kill us all or we coexist peacefully, however, simply can't be known yet. We know nanoscale assembly is on its way, but we don't know if we will grey-goo the universe when we achieve it.

@comic: Did someone see Madagascar recently? Does that shirt refer to his self-esteem (unlikely)? And I thought she had another nickname.

Also, that's cold Marten, real cold. Cold as rubies.

Why didn't she pack the art?

And Jeph; neither does a message typed too fast.

akronnick:
Oooooo.

Ziiiiiiiinnnngggggg!!!!!

Marten just ripped on Faye and Dora!

When Faye figures out that he just compared her to the Wicked Witch of the East Marten's gonna be in Trouble.

With a captial 'T'.

And that rhymes with 'P'.

And that stands for:

Pintsize!

Did I Just cross the Wizard of Oz stream with the Music Man stream.

I think I did.

Damn.
