It depends on the nature of the essay. In a literary or philosophical essay I think it's perfectly acceptable to write in the first person, because often in those particular styles of essay you're drawing general conclusions from your own personal and specific experience.

No more than you would in a history, geography or even psychology essay though. I do think people get a bit too hung up on the whole first person thing, particularly since a lot of academics just chuck that rule out the window after their undergraduate years. Requiring high school students to do it seems like a really bad idea though, since most undergraduate courses will at least frown on it.

I Am Not Amused:
I interned there over the summer. They liked me and the work I did. They have brought me on as an employee. It is really really cool, even if it is only part-time right now.
