I just woke up and I'm still seeing double. I remember drinking bad bourbon, gin & tonic, beer (both home brewed and regular), and something I am not sure what was. Also my knee hurts like hell and has turned into all different sorts of colours, and it even has a checkered pattern from what I think is dirt.

So glad I have coffee right now.

I mean it's probably not worth what they are charging for it, but if you get a chance to have one for free then definitely do it because it is still a pretty fine drop

I'm so tired :( I wanted to have a couple of hours of nap but I got a phone call from a guy who's involved in the play I'm stage managing next week and basically he was saying that I had to go to the theatre today to sort stuff out for tomorrow's dress. I'm pretty sure I could get it all done in the morning before the rehearsal but it isn't worth the hassle with him if I don't go. He isn't actually in charge, he's just controlling.

So off I go with the bizarre props I was asked to get two days ago (after most shops had shut, so basically I had the weekend to get them). The list includes a 1980s copy of Readers Digest, two pairs of red plastic poinsettia earrings, a collage of 80s hairstyles and a load of A5 envelopes. Readers Digest is hopefully sorted, I'm going to photocopy the cover from one in the UL tomorrow. Earrings are not happening - poinsettias are Christmas flowers! So I've bought some hairclips which look vaguely similar and they will have to act as though they're actually earrings. Envelopes and collage? No problems.

Sleeeeeeeeeep.

Blog thread,

I want to adopt a puppy. I have been thinking about it for two years now and have decided that I totally want a Welsh Corgi. I live in an apartment in the St. Louis and want to get a baby from a local shelter. I checked out their website and I've got everything covered except for a fenced yard. I mean, there's a fence, but there's a huge opening at my building's carport.

I live within walking distance of a dog park where he could run around and the girlfriend and I have been taking a lot more walks and runs now that it has warmed up. I don't know.

How important is having a fence to an adoption agency? I would probably be pretty heartbroken if I found the perfect baby puppy and was denied because I don't have an enclosed yard. Anyone have experience adopting a pet?

I've had two dogs and one cat die in my life, and whenever a pet dies I'm reminded of a long, beautiful poem by Louis MacNeice entitled the Death of a Cat. I won't quote the entire poem but the most pertinent lines are these:

Quote
So this is an epitaph, not for calamitous
Loss but for loss; this was a person
In a small way who had touched our lives
With a whisk of delight, like a snatch of a tune
From which one whole day's mood derives.

The death of our pets is the inevitable and dreadful trade-off we make against the great joy their lives bring us. My condolences to you and your family at the loss of your cherished companion.

my condolences paul, i've never had a pet of my own so i have no idea what its like to lose a pet but it must be horrible.

but guys yesterday the piece of music i wrote this semester was played in my schools composition recital! it was really rad, albeit weird hearing somebody play music i wrote. the best part though is that my theory teacher (also head of the composition department) who is one of the goddamn smartest musicians i have ever met said my piece was cool and that he really liked it, which was really validating.

so uh yeah being a composer!

Opening night to my play. The dress rehearsal went eerily well (we finished HALF AN HOUR EARLY) so I was waiting for the other shoe to land but it was great! One leg of the Christmas tree stand fell off just as it was about to be put on the stage so they had to improvise past the lines that mentioned the tree, but it was very smoothly done.

Time for bed, I'm getting up at 6am (:-o) to go to the gym (:-o).

So...uh...long story short: how does one care for stitches?

Long story long: My boyfriend has this weird condition, preauricular sinus pits. Basically, he had these tiny holes near his ears that often got infected and would swell up and looked like cysts, and when they'd drain, this big gross popcorn-y looking pus would come out. It's been an ongoing lifelong situation. Just recently one got horrible infected, but was not draining. We freaked out, and took him to see a specialist about it. The doctor walked in the room, glanced at his ear, and said "So...when did you want to schedule that surgery?"(the time before that he had gotten infected, the doctor had him get a CAT scan for the surgery, but my boyfriend chickened out and never got the surgery). This time, he went ahead and got the surgery. That was Monday. The doctor removed a lot of the gross stuff from his ears, and said that he didn't think that he would get an infection(he had previously had a surgery similar to this one, to work on the same problems, but the previous dr botched the whole thing, and my boyfriend's ear pits got super infected), but he prescribed a antibiotic just in case.

Now, we are home, and he is taking the antibiotic twice a day, and we are reapplying the polysporin ointment twice a day. Since last night, the whole area has become pretty swollen, but only on one side. Should we be concerned? He is sleeping now, but I'm about to wake him up so I can clean up the wounds and reapply the ointment, so I'm gonna check for any other signs of an infection(warmth, smell, numbness), but is there anything else we should look out for? I've never had stitches before, so I don't know anything about it. Is this much swelling normal? I can maybe post pictures if need be.

Please don't post pictures.
Stitches (or any wound) shouldn't really swell all that much in my experience. They should scab up and start healing.
In any case, Doctors are better at this sort of thing than any of us could be.

Aww, don't be a wuss Lunchy.

Anyway, yeah, a doctor is best. But with that said, what kind of time line are you talking about here? I'm assuming it's a short one, because if there was some swelling and stuff that came up pretty soon after the surgery, that wouldn't be very unusual, but if he's had a day or two to recover and THEN has gotten some swelling, that's a big red flag. Other than that, keep the stitches dry the first day, dry carefully after that and when you apply the ointment wipe from the center of the wound outward so as to clear shit away from the wound as opposed to cramming more in there.

Please don't post pictures, as far as I know, none of us are doctors anway. Also gross.

Stitches are pretty easy to care for, just keep them clean and if the doc gave you stuff to rub on it then rub it on. I've had stitches a couple times, it ain't no thang.

hahaha I didn't mean pictures of the wounds themselves. Just a face to face(camera) view, compared to a similar picture(from before the surgery) so you could see the swelling. It's pretty obvious without a comparison, however.

And he just had the surgery around 12-2pm yesterday. Today would be the first day of healing. It started swelling a tiny bit during the evening last night, and didn't really get bad until mid afternoon today.

It's not warm, and doesn't smell, and after just cleaning it, I think it looks a lot better. It seems some(and by that I mean a tiny tiny bit) or]f the swelling went down with his nap. The doctor went on vacation the day after the surgery(so today), but left us with his cell number. Its too late to call tonight, but if the swelling hasn't gone down by tomorrow, I am gonna call him.

And I'm confused on the "keeping it dry" part. So obviously, don't soak it in water, insta-dry it when it gets wet, but what about the ointment? Does that count as being wet? Or not, since it's a more of a gel.

Just wrote a really smarmy slightly pissed-off email and sent it to everybody in my office because the management are thinking of instituting the most easygoing dress code ever (shirt with a collar, neat long pants, sneakers OK but they should be neat and subdued-looking) and people are getting butthurt because they can't wear t-shirts anymore and it will stifle the creative atmosphere or some shit.

Have so far received 4 replies with variations on "woah, dude"

I am pretty sure most of my workmates would crack the shits if told they had to wear collared shirts.
Most of 'em get around in daggy old t-shirts, shorts and either thongs or sneakers. I'm not much better but I do at least own a blazer and some shoes that aren't Converse now.

Nah, the ointment doesn't count. Just don't take a long soak in the tub the first day is all I'm really saying. Stitches are pretty easy and common sense should get you through just fine. Even my wipe from the center of the wound out comment isn't really that big of a deal. It's an easy thing and is technically best practices, but ultimately it's not all that terribly much more effective than say, voodoo. Just don't do anything crazy and he'll be good to go.

what type of job do you have, if you don't mind me asking? it sounds like you work with a beanbag design company

It is a private college teaching film, audio engineering, animation and multimedia/design

It seems like the opposition is neatly split between audio staff (who make up the bulk of the staff and couldn't really care less) and the film/multimedia people (who are crying because they can no longer express themselves through the medium of that fucking 1UP shirt everyone has and neon nu-rave shit from straight outta 2k7)

I can't tell you how much I wish I could wear t-shirts to work.   Shit, I'd be happy if I could just wear short sleeved anything and/or a pair of pants that didn't have to get dry cleaned.  Corporate America suuuuuuuuucks.

As my company keeps getting bigger and our stock price higher, we're getting more and Brooks Brothers every day.    Whereas in 2k4 I was told "Please don't wear a tie and a jacket" and a 'My don't you look nice' day was a pair of dockers and a button down shirt, today I own a stunningly large amount of clothing with instantly recognizable names on the labels.   The pressure to conform to what a corporate executive "should" be, is so great that I'm actually considering buying another car for no other purpose than to take it to work.  Heaven forbid someone drive an affordable, fuel efficient four-cylinder with a manual transmission and a Carmax sticker on the back.   That's not portraying the image we want.

I'm currently at work in jeans and a Metallica T-shirt my sister brought me from Israel. It has Metallica written in Hebrew on it. Or at least I hope that's what it says. It also has a large skull on it (shortest straw drawing).

I have a shapeless work uniform and a cardigan.  Pair that with stockings, a pikachu handbag and my pokemon lunch bag and I look like I am someone's child who dropped into the office and just started messing around on the computers, typing shit.

Also guys today I got one of those little post office slips that indicates there is a parcel waiting for me at the post office and it is marked as international and I am 99% sure I haven't bought ANYTHING online recently let alone from overseas because I haven't even had the internet and Emilio promised me he sent me a dead ostrich and that would be ok except I am pretty sure none of you people have my address, not my current one anyway so clearly it is bombs from terrorists.

Seriously, did anyone send me a present?  I can't imagine why you would but I am running out of explanations!
